Sweet deer....love the mass....you'd have to have a Henries tag to even think about passin a buck like that....

Quick Story,
I like to stay as mobile as possibe glassing in the morning till 11am then looking between one and two miles away for another vantage. Then moving camp and picking up where I left off that morning in the evening. We seen Around 55 bucks in three days and on opening morning I decided I like the charicter of this buck enough to pack it out of the nastiest hole in Wyoming. 6 hours later I made it to the county road not with out a few mishaps, And the loss of my 20X60X80mm Swaro spotting scope. That will rest in pieces at THE PURE. I was about 9 miles north of where I started and thanks to two Pete's one from Arizona and one from California I made it to my truck. Funny thing is two of my own Wyoming Brothers did not have the great sportsman like attitude to help a local yokal out. It was a great trip with a good friend and priceless memories. Trophies are great when they rest on the wall but they are only there to remind you of the good times and hardships endured.
Casualties= Stoney Point mono pod - $30
Kodak Camera - $350
Spotting Scope - $2100
Sitting on top of the highest peak - Priceless

BEAUTY! Dang I am jealous! Great buck, high country altitude, and a great shed find to top it all off!

Glad somebody finally broke the ice on showing a Wyoming Buck...Congrats---you definitely earned that one! Like you said you'll always remember the priceless memories....

What an awesome and unique buck.......congratulations and thanks for sharing.

Sweet buck and a great story. Sorry us Wyoming guys did not help you out. I would have. Be sure to get an interstate game tag on those other antlers off the dead buck. Game and Fish is really getting picky about that. Last set I picked up I had to fill out lots of papers and pay the fee to get them registered, as well as verify the exact location they came from..

Congrats on a great buck!

So did you leave your scope up there or did it just break?....Swarovski has good customer service might be worth hiking back up there and covering your tracks to find it and send it in??

Nice color on those antlers! I'd drop into the nastiest hellhole for a buck like that as well! Great job.

Well here is the rest of the story. After the 255yrd shot I was excited to climb down and check out the deer. I knew he was not as wide as what I would have liked but knew he had good mass and some interesting stuff going on. As I got down to the deer I was waiting for my friend to get down to me. I was looking the hill over for him and could not see him. As my eyes came back to the scruddy trees my deer was in I noticed some tines sticking out. I yelled up that I had found another deer. I was just guessing but thought it was about 28" main frame. We took all the pictures and I had to run back up to the ridge top to get my pack. In the hurry I forgot to take my spotting scope out in the rush. I got back down to the deer where we boned it out, took a few more pictures and I headed down the trail. Just kiddin there was no trail. When I was at the top of the ridge I looked down and could see the county road and the path that I wanted to take. What I could not see was the cliffs that were between the ridge top and the path at the bottom. As I came to the cliff line I knew I was committed to the route out the bottom if I wanted to have a warm bed for the night. So I found a new path but had to do some climbing to get to it. As I came over the top and crested over it started raining. I was thankfull as it was pretty hot out. Then shortly after I was soked and struggling down hill in the mud. After a short slip in the mud (about 30' down) I picked myself up and kinda chuckled a bit. Then I crossed a creek and my new boots as comphy as can be taught me that they still slip on wet rocks. The current took my feet out from under me. That is where the current took my Stoney Point mono pod, and soaked my camera. I took my card out of the camera and dried it as quick as I could and put it in a dry bag. Then I came to another set of cliffs. They did have a slight slope to them and some good foot holds. Once stable I would move my pack from my left side to my right and stableize it the move to the other side and do it again for about 20-30 yrds. I came into one slide and had to get to the next to go done with out slipping. When I tried to move the pack again it started pulling me down with it. I held on as long as I could but had to let it go. I followed the packs route down the slide and picked up my bladder and one side off the deer that I had found dead. External frame broken, spotter gone. I am sure that it got slung out in some deep shrubs. I took a 5 min. break and bent the sides back out on my pack looked my deer over. Not a hair missing on the cape. Chuckled again and took off. The pack was in amazing shape for the fall it just took. After another hour of up and down I actually ran into a groomed trail. This is where the Wyo boys came up on me. Two guys 4 horses packers only had a saddle. I asked if they had room for a pack. "NOPE"!!! They did help though, they gave me a little more drive. Which brougt me to my next obsticle. The river. In the dark, swift and I fatigued. Oh yea cold. Made it through that and that is where I met the first Pete. Couple beers later and some grub he gave me a ride to my turnout and That is where I met the second Pete who gave me a ride to my truck. Started at 3pm made it to the road at 9pm and to my truck at 11. Awesome trip and I am ready to do it again.
Before the fall

Useta, coulda, woulda but no more! Bucks back in country like that are safe from older farts like me...at least as long as i can't actually see them.

Somebody's got to do it though and you sure enough did!

Great Job! Very enjoyable thread, Thanks!!

Sorry for the dumb question, but does the rifle season start early for residents? or am I missing something? I hunt in Wyoming and it doesn't start tell Oct 1st.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-22-09 AT 07:19PM (MST)[p]And that is where the story gets better. If you want to add excitement to an extreme hunt throw in taking it out of season. That is exciting. Just kidding you almost tricked me to tell you the exact area. The rifle season opens on Sept 15 in the area the deer was harvested in. If you hunt in Wyoming check your regs and you will find some Sept 15 openers.

If you get a chance you should go back up and find your spotter or at least map your route down so that next year you can try and find it.
Nice looking buck love the mass.

great deer. congrats.

Great story and buck!
So..if I find your Swaro can I keep it?

I would be glad to be a live after that.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-23-09 AT 06:54PM (MST)[p]Well actually if you do find it. I would love to have it back. Here are the directions. 41deg 31' 43.31"N 109deg 28'02.53"W. Let me know what you find. And good luck. I cant offer a large reward as it is negotiation time and a recent divorce. But I will buy you a beer when you get there.

Im sure you didn't know this, but its against the law to pick up antlers that are attached to the skull in the state of Wyoming before contacting the game and fish Dept.

Just so you all know. I will tell you it your job to know the law. I do know the law and I have lived here for over 20 years. I also talk to the local game wardens in my county of residence. It is against the law to pick up a skull without a tag issued by the game and fish department. Cell phone service is pretty good on the peak I was camped on. And the local numbers are programed into my phone. So there it was known that they were comming out. And to top it all off I only took them half way out before the unfortunate decent of my pack and the loss of one side of the antlers. The pick up was at least three years old. If you want to see what I really did wrong look for the duck call in the background. Let me know if you find it. Now get out your maps and find where I lost my scope and left my duck call.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-25-09 AT 04:02AM (MST)[p]Warden in the southern part of WY don't care if your the Gov. you just can't pick up a rack with skull attached..(you had to of know someone was going to say something about that on your pack!)..I found a nice moose rack that was about 3/4 years old with skull attached and was read the riot act and fined as a non resi there and he said the law was plan and clear you can't have them leave'em lay!!!(as I was leaving to the bank he change the docket to a written warning...)
I LOVE YOUR STORY MAN!! I feel better already!

LAST EDITED ON Sep-25-09 AT 05:37AM (MST)[p]As stated above RM call ahead. They have interstate game tags for a reason. If you call ahead and ask them if you can it is a different story. If you assume you can take them they will remind you that there job is to protect the laws. But get a name of the person giving permission. That always helps to. Dont pick up a head in Utah. No exceptions. Colorado take it. Wyoming ask first, Never assume it is your right to take it. Oh yea I forgot to mention that those were the laws as of the last time I looked for sheds or hunted in that state. Just want to make that clear as laws can change as quick as an assumption can take place on M.M.
