iron sites vs. scope

I was just curious as to how many of you still shoot iron sites. I know it's a lost art these days and you can still find an old timer or two that still practice it. I have never shot a scope in my life and have been hunting for as long as i can remember. I have never seen my dad shoot a scope either and he and i sort of take pride in it. I guess its the start of a tradition so to speak...

So, i was just wondering how many of you still shoot with iron sites and why.

I've won a few bets at the rifle range because I can hit something with open sites, which is what I grew up shooting. HOWEVER, I long since switched to the more effective and easier-to-see telescopic sites.

Within the shadows, go quietly.

Scope on my .223 varmint rifle but iron on everything else. My hunting rifles of choice are 1874 Sharps 45-70, 30-30, Winchester 94 45LC. My wife shoots iron sights on a Remington 700 30-06. She has some nice stuff on the wall. Her moose was 459 yards and the 2 shots were 3 inches apart. Whatever you shoot, practice is key. Not just the week before hunting season either.

I've taken quite a few critters with Iron's.

In Africa, I took a Giraffe, Eland, Gemsbok and Blue Wildebeest with an open sighted .458 Lott. Furthest shot was the Eland at 175 yards.

I've also killed a lot of white tail and a few mulies with open sights.

I love iron sights. That being said, that .458 Lott now wears a scope. You can't beat the precision of a scope. I took a cow elk at 250ish with my Lott last year. I would have never taken the shot with iron sights.

Good luck and happy hunting,

Todd

Iron sights are way too variable for most shooters. Any sighted in scope gives you a precise sight picture and you cannot get that with open sights.
