Just wondering if they were any bucks like this left in there...this wasnt the only good one I saw in there that year.

wow don't think there is many bucks like that anywhere.monster for sure, tell the story please.

November 16th, 1991 to be exact...a friend and I both drew that permit together. He had a hunt booked with Jon and had been down there hunting a week before I got down there. I struck out on my own after daylight that morning and Tom and Jon were chasing another big buck they had seen at dawn...we were about two miles apart when I found this buck with a handfull of does and another 30" buck.(4X4 with eye guards 185 BC) It was easy to pick the big one..or should I say the larger of the two. I watched them strut around for a few moments before I shot the 7X6 at only 100 yards. He went 218 0/8 gross, 209 7/8 gross typical, 195 2/8 net typical. He had 8 1/8 inches of cheaters.(never could make myself call them "trash" points) 30 3/8 outside. G2s were 21+. Had him scored officially and entered into B&C in 1992.

I want to say I saw a picture of that buck being used in a guide's advertisement in the back of the Huntin' Fool? What a stud. Congrats.

I believe he killed that buck with my buddy Shane Ristau. I've see that photot on his wall. Great part of unit 11 where he killed that buck.

That is correct....how is Shane doing these days?

Some years back he came up and hunted antelope with me and shot a really good buck(close to B&C)

Hey Pat! Good to hear from you!

Unit 11 will never quite be the same as the year you drew, being the first rut hunt year. There are still good bucks to be had, they can survive the seasons by holding in the timber. The last book class buck I've seen was perhaps 8+ years ago though, curiously just up the ridge from where you shot yours. The genetics are there though, my brother shot one in the same area 3 years ago that had 12-13" forks, but was only 21" wide. Also , was with Nezzy and his wife Shelly 2 years ago and saw one that might have gone 185 in the late Nov rut hunt, in another area of the unit. It got away thanks to some people who had 4 wheeler access to a closed road, but that's another story.... Shelly has the same tag again this year though. And of course there's always a few stories running around of a big one here or there.

At any rate it's still a great unit to put in for, and you would be welcome to stay here, I'd even hunt with you and show the area again. Unit 22 might be a better one by next year or the year after because of 2 pt regs (3rd and 4th year). BTW You need to make a Steelhead trip out here with Sather sometime, you're missing out!

Hey Shane, thanks for the invite on the Steelheads...sounds like a good time.

I'd like to hunt over there again sometime. Cant find much prettier country than that anywhere in the west.

Give a call sometime and we'll get caught up!!!

Pat

Believe that buck is featured in the book "Idaho's greatest mule deer". Awesome Buck.
