Let me begin by saying that I have waited for this moment ever since he was born. I have taken him out with me on several day trips mostly with my bow in hand. Unfortunately, the video game craze has really taken him over. This year I bought him a deer tag and last week I took him shooting......pretty good shot! Last night he had a friend over for a 'sleep over' and about 10:00 I reminded him that we were going hunting the next morning.
Six o'clock came and I woke him up as we were planning on leaving the house @ 6:30am. I had invited Elkhuntingfool and his son to come along. We drove up to the parking spot and found no one there......GREAT(for those that know me you probably know where I went)! We walked up the trail and decided to sit @ about 7:00am. I told Dave that we had better sit and wait for light as I was sure we would see something. Boy was that prophetic........
Once I sat down I took out my Vortex optics and began glassing the opposite hillside and within a couple of minutes I said to everyone.....BIG BUCK right across from us! It took what seemed like forever to point out to everyone where he was. My son was sitting behind me and using my shoulder as a rest. I ranged them @ 300yds. Just then the buck took a couple of steps forward and ANOTHER buck appeared. Just then I told my son to take the one in back. He said are you ready..yes....BOOM...the unmistaken sound of the 'THUD'....the buck walked backwards about 50yds and stopped, head down...HURT! The other buck just stood there while Elk's son began his quest.....after a few shots the buck took off not to be seen again. All the while my son's buck was still stand broadside. I told my son to finish him off. BOOM......Dad, I know I missed.....chamber another round, BOOM, the buck took off straight downhill and crashed. We sat there for about 20 minutes then took the hike down and back up to the 'kill zone'. I walked up to where the last shot was and there was a steady trail of blood heading downhill. we followed it for about 50yds and there he was. The biggest buck I have been a part of, definitely a buck of a lifetime! I have not scored it yet, but it is 30" wide, 5x4 with matching eyeguards. Enjoy........

Having problems with the pix....any help???

Can't duplicate that rush with video games! Great story and props to you for spending quality time in the woods with your son. My best memories are exactly like the one you just shared. You know your son will remeber this for the rest of his life! Way to go pops!

Nate

p.s. As for the pictures, I upload mine onto photobucket, copy & paste them onto the post. It automatically re-sizes them for you. Good luck

Man I gotta see this! You must like right near the mountain if you didn't leave the house until 6:30, talk about being lucky, or blessed, or good!!!

That is an awesome first deer! In one day of hunting your son shot a bigger deer then I have my whole life! Tell him congrats, hope he is hooked and maybe now he'll spend a little less time on the video games.

I'm just curious if it was a private land deer..? That is one beautiful buck... Congrats to you and your son... That would be on my wall in a heartbeat..!

Congrats Kelly. I've always said you deserve something like this and to be able to have your kid do it is even better. Hopefully that luck continues for us in a couple weeks with the elk.

P.S. There is a G5 broadhead on the right side stuck in the antlers. I want it back please.

WOW , what a first deer . Congrats Kelly , That is very cool that you where able to share that experience with your son . I would bet you have a hunting partner for life now .

Kelly, Congrats on a great buck. What a dream come true!!!

P.S.If this buck was taken where I think it was then I think we have some footage of him during the rut last year. Send me a pm if you would like to see it.

That buck is just perfect! Congratulations to you and your son. I can't wait until my 3 year old is old enough to hunt!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-20-09 AT 02:26PM (MST)[p]I think I watched this buck and his pals alot this summer! Nice job on harvesting a beauty! I'd bet the other buck with him was a decent/tall 3 x 4??

I'm stoked to see a young hunter harvest this one! Nice work and congrats.

Guess I can stop looking for this guy to turn up! :)
