09 deer hunt

I had big plans this year to shoot a big buck or go home empty handed. About a month ago my 12 year old son asked me if he could go. I was kind of shocked he has never shown any interest in hunting, of course I said yes. So know what, I really had my hopes set on a big buck and had the whole week, my boy on the other hand had to be home on Sunday. On Thursday we headed to the hills, 5 hours later we got camp set up and went looking for some deer, we seen a few smaller bucks and one 16-18" 3x3. Friday same story. So Saturday morning rolls around and we decide to check out an area that we had seen most of the deer in, about 8:30 a.m. we spot a couple of deer way up at the top of the drainage we are in, they were a lot bigger than the rest of the deer we have seen but I couldn't be sure they were bucks, as we try to get closer I spotted a couple other smaller bucks and my son got real excited and kept asking me "can we shoot them", I told him if we get close enough. I met up with my friend Matt and his son and we snuck over the hill 200 yds from the bucks with the boy looking on I ended our hunt. This is by far not the biggest buck I have shot, or one I had hoped for but in the end it might just be the best one ever.

big bucks are not as good as big smiles. I would have done the same thing if my girls are by my side.

Archery is a year round commitment!!

All he talked about on the way home is hunter safety and what kind of rifle we should get for him. I'm happy he has finally seen the light and given me a hunting partner for years to come.
