My Brothers First Buck - Utah 2009

Well today was a great day, especialy for my brother Aaron (15 years old). We got up bright and early for the Second Utah opener (Wed 21rst) And headed up to one of my go to spots on the Central Mt Nebo Unit. After a 25 Minute hike we were were we needed to be. And after a quick glass of the area I was able to find a small 2 point and a doe. I got on the radio and told my brother (who was on the other side of the ridge) that there were deer over on my side. They got over to me but the deer were now out at about 450-500 yards and you could not tell which was the buck, but no sooner had they got to me and looked around my dad says that there was another up the canyon from us. In a clearing that I had just glassed over.

We'll upon first finding it in the binos there was no dought that we were going to shoot at this buck. He was beded down almost directly across from us and at about 300 yards. We got my brother settled in and told him were to hold the cross hairs. Then I got ready on the back up just in case. Well his firs shot from the good ole 270 rang out and dirt flys up just the right of the buck. Miss #1.

That was all that buck needed to know that he had better be geting the crap out of there, and in a hurry. So shot #2 rings out and Miss #2 follows.

The whole time we are telling my brother shoot again and calm down. Which I don't know if that is possible, especialy on your first time shooting at a buck. At this point I am thinking that this deer is one lucky buck and is going to be getting away. And if your wondering why I was not shooting is because this was my brothers buck and if it gets away than so be it. I was only there to put one in it if he wounded it and it was still moving out.

Back to the story, so the third round gets put in the chamber and shot #3 rings out, only this time we hear that unmistakable sound of bullet impacting flesh, you guys know the one. That definate "THUD". This time he hit him. The buck then gets up the hill another 20 feet and stops behind a big ole dead pine tree. All we could see was the white rump patch. He was just standing there so we held steady. Then all of a sudden it tipped over.

My brother and dad stayed there wathching it, at least what they could see of it, while I took off to get over to it. When I got over to it I thought that I would be seeing a decent 2point but there is nothing wrong with having a deer get bigger the closer you get to it. Definatly no ground shrinkage on this buck I had no clue that it was a nice buck like this.

Enjoy the pictures. Sorry I don't have the shot on video, crap was happening to fast to be able to get the camera out.

Congratulations Aaron, that is a dang fine buck especialy for your first. Thanks for letting Dad and I tag along and enjoy the hunt with you. Can't wait till next year.

This is how I found him.

nice first buck, good on you for not gettin an itchy trigger finger and letin your brother shoot the buck. Probably made you more happy anyway seeing him kill it than if you would have.
