My opening day....(pics)

Well, my opening day of the general deer here in N. Utah didn't go as expected. Big bucks were seen, with one in the cross hairs but the trigger wasn't pulled due to low light in the morning not being able to see how big of a 4 point he was. He gave me the slip before I could get the right angle on his rack. As the morning progressed, we saw search and rescue bailing off the top above us looking for someone after light. At 11:00 am dad and I headed up the canyon to find a spot for the evening hunt. I stopped on a point to glass a deep canyon. Right after I turned the atv off I heard a faint cry for hrlp down below me. I thought a kid had gotten separated from his dad and was too tired to climb out of that hell hole. I ran down the ridge to see what they needed and ran into a 16 year old girl that was beat to heck! I asked her what happened and she said she and her friend rolled their truck off the road and her freind was still down under the truck. I helped her up to the road, dad called 911 and I headed back down to the truck not knowing what I was going to find. When I got there, I found a 17 year old boy laying underneath the truck ALIVE! He could not move or talk so I just kept talking to him to let him know the worst was over and gave him encouragement to keep fighting through it until the rescue crew arrived. Two other hunters came down and we covered him up to keep him warm. Not much we could do until the medics got there. He ended up being life flighted from the scene. Take a look at the pics and tell me what you think. I have no clue how they both survive that roll and I can't beleive the truck stopped rolling whar it did! There was nothing holding that truck back from going another 1000 yards or so. Had it not stopped there, they would have died for sure!

This is what they rolled down

Another pic of the roll path, you can see the truck down lower.

Here is the boys ride out.
Again, not what I expected to do on the opener up farmington canyon. But glad to be in the right place at the right time. Apparently they rolled before sun-up and we didn't discove them until 11:15 am. Search and rescue got a call from a hunter that thought they heard some one yelling for help in the dark but did not know where the voice was comming from that is why the rescue crew did not find them, they were searching in the wrong canyon.

Holy shiz, thats an opening morning you'll never forget. Hope everyting turns out ok for the kid..

Wow! Thats en eventfull opening day and they are lucky you were there and acted as quickly as you guys did. I hope they are both alright.

I'm surprised more of that does not happen up that canyon. That is one drive that makes my knuckles white. Sounds like they were lucky to survive that trip.

When we were moose hunting up Farmington last year, we saw a truck that ran off the road. The front bumper was in the ground and the truck was balancing completely straight up vertically, exposing the entire underside of the truck. It looked like to me that they didn't make the curve before the last climb to the top, just below those couple of camp sites. I have a picture someplace but I can't find it right now.

Sorry guys, I had alot more pics that apparently did not upload. Any suggestions?? I'm not sure what it means above when it sys "just type the URL"?? I'm not pulling through photo bucket, just sizing and copying through my microsoft office program.

Having slide off that road 30 years ago, I can attest to the dangers and pure luck/blessing that those two kids had. WOW!!

Brings back some strong memories and emotions. I only went about 30 feet off before getting hung up on a tree. No injuries, $370 tow bill, and $850 repair bill, and I felt very blessed. My life turned around that day, thats for sure.

Good job being in the right place at the right time to help out.

My wife had one of her best friends die after rolling his truck on that road back in the late 90's. I'm not a big fan of that road and can't believe more people don't die up there.

We used to hunt up there through the late 70's and 80's and that road is as dangerous as any I have ever been on, especially when it is wet. I was continually scared that we were going to roll over the side. Real white knuckle stuff. Glad (and surprised) to hear they survived.

Just glad you was there. Hope they both pull thru.

The boy (Mason) is in critical condition with possible head trauma... (this is what i heard from a friend)

The girl (Rachel) has a punctured lung and alot of cuts and bruises. She literally pulled her self up that side hill as her leg was hurt pretty bad.. (talked to her about it)

I know of Mason, but i don't personally know him. i'm friends with Rachel though, wish them well.

They were at a friends cabin on the backside of farmington and after they headed down ,around 3 am, lost control and went off the edge

Karma to you bloodtracker for sacrificing your opening day for a "grander" purpose! If you haven't already, I honestly hope you kill the biggest buck in the state. Encouraging story with a good ending to a bad situation. Good job dude-I'd shake your hand if I could.
Nate

Kudos to you for what you did and thank the good lord you were there to help them. I can't imagine what it was like for that poor girl the 4 or 5 hrs she was trying to get help knowing that boy was lying under the truck and to learn her lung was punctured all I can say is thank god for both of them.

To my new (deer) friend Bloodtracker: You really are Somethin? Special. You say you were positioned in the ?right place at the right time? but, from start to finish and even initiating the day before the accident?this event was no coincidence. This whole incident was/is such a Devine Miraculous symphony of events. No man could have orchestrated it! God loves us, even though we are not perfect, and connects us, and although I don't fully understand, I am changed, humble, and deeply grateful.

Mason is on the mend. His injury to the brain affects his short term memory. He is overly sensitive to light and noise and overstimulation to the brain is cause for great frustration. There is a possibility he will need surgery on his elbow, but for now he is resting/sleeping most of the day. He has slight nerve damage evident in his left hand, but through daily exercises is regaining mobility. Mason is strong willed and very capable of sending one of the biggest messages/lessons of the year. We are hopeful that very soon he will be blessed with the capability to wrap his own mind around it all and discover why and prepare himself to do a work that only he can do.

I thank you for your post and photos. I couldn't understand how he could have been ?underneath the truck? and the outcome so promising. As graphic as it is, my husband would like more photos, if you have them; I on the otherhand don't allow myself to fall into the dark hole of could have beens, or the reality of what was, I stay above it all in my mind and am just so very grateful for everything and everyone!

To all who posted below, I want to THANK YOU as well! You displayed a real love and concern for our family, unlike the crazies on KSL.com whom let speculation and emotion take over.

I look forward to the day when I can thank you eye to eye and wrap my arms around you in appreciation. I'll mention that we own a Powersports Dealership in Centerville, so please allow us to pay forward some of our debt by way of helping out with your hunting accessories..

The story doesn't end here, it is just the beginning, the unfolding is fascinating?

Wow, Hope they are ok!
One year on the glade we had a really cold storm blow through, the roads were like glass!
Some guy rolled his jeep on the main road going 25 mph, same type of situation however he only rolled down a 10 foot embankment.
Rescuers gave mouth to mouth for two hours until ambulance arrived and I heard he ended up passing away.

My biggest fear is something would happened to me up in the mountains(I hunt alone) and nobody would be around for help.

Thanks god for someone being around this bad accident and helping out.

This will make me think twice the next time I pull off the highway onto the dirt road and unsnap that seatbelt

i have been on the washington county search and rescue team for about seven years and we have seen many accidents like this that dont turn out as good. also for those of you that hunt alone, we just barried a good friend that rolled his atv on the boulders during the rifle hunt and was not found for five days so just be careful and check in every chance possible. weatherbys rule
