First Hunt

I took my 6 year old step son, Reese, out for his first hunt on Sunday, and he did great. We passed up a couple of smaller bucks at first light, which he wasn't too thrilled about because the little dink 2 x 3 was "his deer" going in "his room," and he was worried that we wouldn't see anything else.

30 mins later, I dropped this nice buck from 188 yards, with the boy watching the whole thing. He loved it, and was a big help holding legs and helping out with the cleaning process. The buck will look good on the Reese's wall, and I'm sure he'll remind his little brother on a daily basis that it's "his" deer. I can only hope that his interest continues and that he will be harvesting his own animals when he turns 12.

Dude, that is awesome! What a great buck and it's great that your son was there. I had my first child (son) last month and can't wait to share memories like this with him.

Way to go; hats off. A+++

I love it!

Nice story. My son was 4 when he went and saw one go down. it was alot smaller than i wanted but he really wanted me to shoot it. He is 12 now and just took his 1st buck. You're gonna love that day.....

One of the best moments I've had in the 20 years I've been hunting: Having him run up and give me a big high five when he "found" his deer laying in the snow.

I'm already picking out camo patterns for his baby sister.

I have a little 4 year old boy that Im looking forward to taking out. Do you feel like you could have taken yours out sooner or was 6 years old about the right time? How much walking did you do?

Congrats on a great buck and on being a good dad.

We walked about 2 miles total, and, towards the end, he was definitely tiring, although the ice and snow had to be a rough go on his little legs. He could've went out last year. The key, I think, is to realize that hunting with kids is not the same as hunting solo, and to be patient. If you can do that internally, you'll have a great time.
