Wyoming Region G & H ???

I was wondering if anyone has hunted these two regions lately. If so, what size of bucks would I likely be seeing in these regions or region. Thanks for any info..

i hunted both of those regions this year (i live in h)...... you gotta work hard for a big buck. My buck from this year goes 189 3/8 and i hunted 19 days straight and scouted probably close to 30 days. Anything is possible... 220" bucks do exist. But good luck. You would be way better off to go to Utah, Colorado, Oregon, Idaho, etc. etc. anywhere but wyoming! And you gotta have a guide to hunt the wilderness areas where the big bucks live. i wouldnt even try for wyoming. And the locals are real bastards especially if you have the "U" word on your license plates.

you sound just like every other wyoming guy i have met. I have hunted G and H for over 15 years, and both units hold GREAT bucks (170-190). I wiould say wyoming both g and h hold better deer than idaho, and utah.

My advice would be put in, scout every single weekend from the 4th of july until you hunt, and you WILL kill a buck that goes from 170 up, (unless you are a blooming idiot)!!

My first bit of advice is NEVER, EVER, EVER take advice from a wyoming resident if you reside in any other state than Wyoming.

Love this place, and everything about it!!!! I am from Ut, and absolutely love G and H (that is why my name in MM is greys river)!!!! Put in, scout, hunt hard, and call the taxidermist~!!

Not true. It wouldn't matter even if you were a local...

My opinion on G and H are this......to draw H as an out of state hunter you are very limited being a do it yourself kind of guy( out of state hunters need a guide to hunt wilderness areas)so this leaves most areas that are leagal for non-residents completely saturated with hunters.

G on the other hand has no Wilderness areas and has good acces to most of the nasty high country, you will still find many many people roaming the cliffs come sept 15 however. The potential to kill a toad is real but it is absolutely mandatory that you do your scouting and research on the area. Plenty of 160 bucks will present themselves but the big boys are few and far between and also very smart. You could very well hunt the whole season and come home empty handed but if the time is spent wisely then soon or later it will pay of.

Me and my partner have hunted G and H together for 5 years and these are the only bucks we have taken. The terain is a challenge, top physical shape is mandatory.

Actually most all the country gets pounded by obsessed trophy hunters, preseason scouting will let you know where a deer lives but come opening morning there is usually backpacking tents and orange vests covering every basin, beautifull country but the experence can be dissapointing. There is unlimited summer range for the deer and the genetics are great for antlers, but winter range is limited and can be harsh, the deer have a hard time living to maturity, this year was open for access during all of November, and Im sure there was some poaching. The truth is, despite living here, I dont get excited about hunting deer in G or H, I spent opening day elswhere in WY

I agree with piper. . . it's like any place with good bucks and lost of history, it's crawling with people . . . does not mean there still arnt some good bucks, but if you choose to hunt it, be sure you prepare your mind for hunting with people. . .

Thanks for the feed back guys. I want to hunt out of state next year and was testing the waters. It is a little closer than Colorado. But I am looking at both states next year. I live in Utah also, but I tired of Utah's deer management. So if I can get a tag in either state I am there. Are there any other regions that I can draw in Wyoming with no points?

G has 800 NR tags, H 1200 and K about 500 You are going to run into Issues with anyone of these tags..... G, if you can draw you will be dealing with people. H has lots of off limit places and K has some private land. I would suggest you pick one and learn it, good bucks in all of them.

It's too bad that Region G has become a zoo. I hunted there several times in the 90's and was suprised at how few people there was. I guess times have changed.

i have hunted h . the problem with it is the big deer are in the gros ventre wilderness early where you need to hire a guide if you are a nr. usually pray for snow and hunt the last two weeks. a horse would be a plus but if you dont have one like me bring some snow shoes and try to get away from the local road hunters and you should find deer up to 180" . the area has potential for bigger bucks, but you shouldnt let a 170-180 walk away.

Just depends on the unit, G is comprised of 4 different units I believe....one unit goes to the 30 a couple to the 6th or 7th and I believe one goes to mid oct...

LAST EDITED ON Dec-31-09 AT 09:06AM (MST)[p]Just so you know!! You don't have to hire a guide if your a non-resident for a wilderness area. If you know someone that lives in WY and can hunt with you they can go to the game and fish and fill out a paper and become your guide. This of course all depends on if you know a WY resident that will hunt with you. Its a lot cheaper.
