Central Eastern Montana

I recently hunted for Mule Deer in Central Eastern Montana. Poor hunt with lots of small 3 point genetics. I was also told that it was a "down" year for horn growth but I have spoken to others that don't agree with this assessment. Anybody else have any thoughts?

well we went two days saw over 50 deer 20 of them were four point or better there were'nt alot of mature bucks running around. we only saw 4 or 5 mature bucks, and we killed one he was aged at over ten years old. but a week later they killed four nice mature bucks all 4 points plus bucks. they are out there but they hole up real bad in that badlands country till the peak of the rut and even then i've seen those bucks run out breed a dow and then go bed down again. there are a ton of bucks out there but the big ones on public land are that way for a reason.

It also seemed like a tougher year to me. Hunted for 5 days, starting opening weekend. Only saw 3 decent bucks. But none of those "omg i have to shoot that one" kinda deer. Hunted badlands/ public land. Saw lots of deer, just not many mature bucks. Then again, i wasnt hunting the rut either.

Sorry I failed to mention that I was hunting a private ranch, during the rut (week before Thanksgiving) and it was "badlands" type terrain.

Yeah the hunting suck here! You don't want to hunt in Montana.

I hunt near Culbertson in the NE corner and it was a bad year for numbers of deer, but with all the rain we had throughout the summer it was a great year for quality. My wife got a very nice muley and I had my chances but couldn't connect. Hope the deer population can rebound next year.
