LAST EDITED ON Jan-22-10 AT 07:49PM (MST)[p]I typically hunt the Shaeridan/Ranchester area but it has dried up. Does anyone have any experience in are Area 87? is there there good public ground? I know there is the Ferris Mountains.

Thanks for any advice, Bill

There is a lot of public ground in area 87. But Carters recommend it as a top area this year, so the odds will be really tough. And I do not know why they recommend it. Not very good habitat, especially winter range and not very good genetics. Like all Wyoming areas, there are a some good bucks. But it would not be an area I would emphasize.

+1 on the public ground. The only thing I would caution is that the public land is fractured a bit and much of the area doesn't hold deer. I'm not sure why the huntin fools recommend this area, either.

I never could understand why they always touted 102 as the best area, either.I think public access plays a part, and ease of getting around, maybe.Maybe he has an outfitter over there that he gets a cut from for recommending the unit?I don't think it's always just about where the highest concentration of big bucks are.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-24-10 AT 09:02AM (MST)[p]I'm not sure where the Carters receive their Wyoming information but I feel like some of their information may be "misleading."

In 2007 The Huntin' Fool listed Unit 78 for Elk as their #3 pick and called it an "easy hunt for 350+ bulls." The odds of drawing were very low and my dad really didn't really want to draw so we put him in, he drew

I should have known better than to apply blind but was pretty naive when I first picked up the subscription, unit 78 is a tiny unit and all private. There are two landowners that both allow hunting, you just have to be careful not to shoot at a local school and the multi-million dollar homes that dot the tiny unit. After hunting for 6 days in December and only seeing a couple groups of elk meandering through the houses with a few raghorns we pulled stakes, it just didn't feel like hunting.

This year the Huntin' Fool has Unit 54 listed as their #1 unit. I thought about keeping quiet to improve my odds of drawing 63, but feel I would want to hear this before I burned my points. 54 has one small area open to public hunting, most of the acres and most of the elk are tied up by the Two Dot Ranch which doesn't allow antlered hunting, check out the map and call the ranch before you apply! The success rates listed for the unit look good on paper but it's an either sex tag, they're shooting cows!

I'm still a subscriber but I do additional research beyond solely relying on their "hot picks." Be careful.

Thanks guys. Dumb question but who/what are you refering to when you say "Huntin' Fool" and "Carter".

Carter would be the founder of the "Hunting Fool" magazine and suggests the area's.
