SW Colo Winter kill

The Durango, Bayfield, Ignacio area has been pounded with insane amounts of snow. There is about 3feet here down at 6500'. I can't imagine how bad it is up higher but the last time I was higher there was about 3' already. This years winter kill is gonna be bad. I wouldn't even waste my points putting in for a tag.

This storm is going hurt alot of deer. that is 2 badass winter in a row dont know how much the deer can take.If its anything like last year it not going to be good! Not good at all.

so how is the huntin for you rez boys this time of year? I mean after all, you guys are still hunting deer right?

Front page of the Durango Herald says that 35" of fresh snow has fallen this week in down town Durango and some places have recieved up to or exceeding 4 feet.

Nope, not worth hunting anywhere near Durango next fall.....wink, wink.'

Little early to say for sure. It has certainly been a cold winter so far.

Ohhh - this thread is about the snow fall. I just thought you were going to post a few more pics of utehunter's buck.

Nice tactic though "wouldn't even bother putting in for a tag down here".

Whatever. Good luck to the deer but I think they will survive.

Ute and his clan are a little rough around the edges, but I think they're right about the snow. All the bad California weather is dumping in the southwest part of Co and especially the San Juan's. Definately something to keep an eye on. I wish the rest of the state would get some moisture. Going to be a dry summer if we don't get some spring snow.

Guy Im not messing around the deer are stuggling just got back for looking for cat tracks deer are in bad bad shape! 4'-5' up a little higher then town not good. but it is early hope we dont get anymore.

by the way you are posting numbers at 10,000 feet and above-not too many animals at these elevations right now.
this last storm was hard and it will stress the deer out, granted we get another and than I'd start worrying, but they move 10 miles to the south and they go from 24 inches to about 5 inches.

Last year winter kill was bad. Did u go a take a look for yourself? Dont take cdow word of it. go look at your local herd then. The deer are in there winter ground now and theres not much for them. I think this year kill will be double what it was last year 4 sure. And with another storm mid week not good. Im happy I will have my brunot tags next year get out of this area with all the winter kill.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-25-10 AT 10:47AM (MST)[p]and I'm going to take your word? after seeing more deer the last two years hunting than since I was a kid probably? We are still way below the snowpack of last two years.

Like I said deer in the bayfield/Ignacio and durango only need to head 10-15 miles south and they are in 6 inches of snow in New Mexico, that's on the north side of hills.
They'll be fine, tougher than you think.

Like I said, if we get another storm like this one with in the next week or two, than yes, I would bet it's going to start getting bad than. Let's hope that does not happen.

Hunting must have sucked when u was kid!jj. Watch it will take time but the deer will be hurt 4 sure. See elk in what used to be all deer winter ground. found 4 does and a little 4pt. buck yesterday dog hunting not even with in a half mile area on stateland! We will see how bad it is. Only time will tell right just hope we dont get anymore snow.

Okay, mr. all mighty great hunter know it all.

We bow down to you mighty deer hunter since you can shoot 180 bucks out in a hay field on the rez in the height of a rut....

Obviously an intellectual discussion is far beyond the reach of some here.

Dont get sad and my deer was on stateland rember. It was post rut too. And he bigger then 180 4 sure. did not say i know it all just tell u what Im seeing from being in the field what have u seen in the field them graphs? Why u talking smack about the rez when u posted up pics of that bull from here rember he was the 380 monster?

LAST EDITED ON Jan-25-10 AT 11:20AM (MST)[p]I never said he was 380 and if I typed it than it was the hunter told me which I know was not a 380 bull, but I had to type what he quoted. than again maybe he's full of chit, like alot of others.
and if I remember you said the guy in the pic was an "axxhole", so I guess you were jealous he took a bull much bigger than what you had a chance at this year?

I'm not sad don't worry, I (as well as many others) here get sick of hearing your BS day in and day out.

I'm curious if you are tribal member why would you even bother hunting state land? Especially if in your eyes it's so terrible?

I still don't believe you either, I know the area too good as well, I can tell about where you shot that buck, was not state land.

But I'm not going to sit here and bicker with you about where and how big. Because it's never true.

You told Manny16 in your 09 euro mount post that your buck was rutting post 61. So was he rutting or not? Nice buck tho congrats on another nice trophy.

If you guys are so worried about the deer not making it, then go buys some hay get a couple sleds, take hay out everywhere where YOUR deer are...i mean after all you dont wanna lose all these monsters that you boys shoot right?! i have heard they are bigger then what anyone else can get? so do something for them!!!

>I don't think I do. Maybe
>I've seen him though.

Who do you know that works for the wildlife dept? You have to know someone that is sending you those pictures.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-25-10 AT 05:32PM (MST)[p]Hey dutch, is the big snow melting at all yet? As you state, there is not an overabundance of snow in the high country yet, but with 35 inches down in Durango, I worry some deer got trapped and can't go lower until it melts. As long as it melts in short order it shouldn't be too bad. Hoping it does.

BTW: Just remember that you are arguing with a kid looking to get you riled. It ain't worth it.

He is gutted look at the blood man. Just got back from killing dog and seen 5 more dead deer I called the dow and told them. She said it going to be a real bad winter kill in the area when she came out to look at them deer

LAST EDITED ON Jan-26-10 AT 07:34AM (MST)[p]txhunter,
last two days have been low 30's-snow's melting but slowly, we are supposed to get another storm coming in tonight or tomorrow through Thursday but have not heard how much. Radar so far does not look terribly bad but you can see the system coming up through Az.

Granted we get another big storm, than I'd start worrying about them.

So I'm hoping we don't get much more snow, I'm hoping it warms up for at least a couple of weeks because I will agree this storm stressed the animals though but I haven't seen any dead yet, we went out for a bit Sunday afternoon.

>take some food back into where
>they are!!! you guys are
>so dam worried bout your

>a little!

That would be illegal bud but I wish I could!

Even the state sometimes won't do that. They did it back in 2008 in Gunnison and they were questioning whether what they were doing was right or not? Now I can't find the article on that.

But should the DOW spend over $100K during a harsh winter for feeding to avoid any catostrophe? or just let nature run it's course?

>take some food back into where

Actually I am worried about winter kill, always! But it's not a matter of "just taking food to them". Like ute hunter said, it's illegal for us to do it and even if I could do it I wouldn't be able to afford it or have the resources for it.

The DOW needs to step in if it gets to that point.

in 2008 in Gunnison area they were looking at almost 50 inches of snow and minus 20 weather. Thank God we are nowhere near that.

Right i agree! sorry it came acrossed like i was saying it to you guys! The Dow should because if there saying its gonna be real hard winter then they should know what to do but it might just be a good thing to let the deer tough it out because of in the long run there not gonna always have a strong source of foor. i hate to hear about losing deer in the winter...damned mother nature sometimes! Quick questing whats the average for snow down there in a year?

Long range forcast calls for highs only up to freezing and more snow. Hopefully most of the animals have gotten down to lower country. Of course, this cold spell will take it told in dead animals, as any winter will do. Hope you get a break in the weather soon.

I find this so hard to believe, we all know that with Climate Change and Global Warming this can't be happening... So it should all melt very soon.

The problem is or the goal is #1-we don't want wildlife to start becoming dependant on humans for their food.
#2-feeding in the winter brings all the animals into one or a few larger herds, this in turn is taking a chance at sickness, CWD, disease, and so on.

So this is kind of a touchy subject at times.

Dutch, I agree...thats why i said well maybe it wouldnt be a good idea, the deer need to find a way to get to a source of food. I understand if the snow pounds them...their pretty much screwed! is it not a drastic change in elevation there? the deer here can come of the mountains and getting plenty of food...but thats because we dont have as much air pressure lower. Its a said situation there because i have seen some of the deer from there and wow!Whomever it is needs to keep the predators off them or atleast try! if i was there i would...i live for killing yotes! :) Ute sounds like he is tryin to take care of it!

Ya for sure.
the gunnison area can be really bad because of one, the depth of snow they can accumulate and two, the temps get God awful cold there, some of the coldest in the state if not the lower 48.

The cold is what really starts getting them because then they are really burning energy to just stay warm.

Here is not so bad, granted they might have to migrate 10-20 miles south but even that will put them from 7,000 to 6,200 feet elevation which can mean life or death sometimes!

I saw 3 cows and a spike Sat north of Durango and they were on the move for sure, snow was almost at their bellies but they were definitely big and fat, which was good to see.

Well i hope their at least tryin to get the h3ll outta there! So just a quick question since im from wyo...is this on the rez where its so bad? With alot of public land around it or what?

northwyohunter,
the Southern Ute Rez lays mostly south of Durango and to the east and west down to New Mexico line with patches of mostly private and some public lands but not much. From Durango to north is mostly forest.

The elk I saw is hard to say but probably heading south to the Florida Creek region and eventually onto rez. Many migrate into valley north of Durango but haven't seen any out there lately and lots of snow there so not sure where they are.

upated weather storm warning. 4-8 inches moving in wed and thurs-includes Paradox, nucla, disappointment valley (huge wintering/migration area) and more.
