I have a friend who lives in idaho he has never shot or killed anything. he is autistic but is able to functions well i am wondering what unit would be a good unit for him? he really just wants to shoot a buck. thanks any help would be great

I've lived and hunted here my whole life. I've got the time and the physical energy to help. I also have two handicapped brothers, whom I've helped get deer. PM me and I'll see what I can do.

GB22, you are a good man! Thanks for helping IDAHO! It is nice to see that type of response, especially for our handicapped fellow hunters. My hats off to you!!

put in for unit 54/55. you will have 1 in 4, 1 in 5 odds and both units have a good number of deer but also good access with roads. that would be my response for you. if you do get a tag in one of those units let me know and i will help you in more detail.

Carter is exactly right.....IF you can draw either tag (54 has slightly better access), that is where I grew up.

It is what I would have told you. HOWEVER, if interested, I can (almost) guarantee a shot at a buck in any unit you choose.....or OTC if you can't draw. Trophies are a little more difficult to come by....but getting a buck is doable.

(Thanks for all the generous comments, guys.)

Grant, you are a heck of a man for making that offer. May the hunting Gods shine brightly on you this fall!!!

Trash220, I am sorry that I didn't give you Kudo's as well for helping you handicap friend. As stated before it is real nice to see guys helping not only the handicap hunters but just helping new hunters in general that don't have a clue where to start. I got my bestfriend who actually is a lifelong friend of 30 plus years to go hunting out west with me in the high country for the first time two years ago. He enjoys it now as much as I do and I cherish every year I spend with him hunting. I wish you and your friend all the luck in 2010.

If he is in a wheel chair or hiking is a challenge i would suggest a desert unit with good odds. you can hun the "Owyhees" and shoot a 2 point max. its not a trophy but there are plenty. it is easy access.

If you are interested at all in getting a buck I would highly suggest you take up Grant's (gb22) offer. He is for real with the hunting and will "gitter done".

Where at in idaho? I have a nephew who is slightly autistic also. My brother has taken a couple handicaped people out and shot their first elk. just was curious to see where at in Idaho

Personally, I now live in Pocatello. As for where I would help the guy get a deer......I'd really suggest units 54 or 55 (as previously stated). HOWEVER, I'd help him find a deer almost any place in the southern 1/2 of the state.

I would too, but depending on work/school time frames i dont know if i could realisticly get out if he wanted to go to boise area. I also have a disabled dad, that cant get around much i never got a chance to hunt with. that My brother and i have got him out the last couple of years. This year i am trying to get him talked into moose. So it really depends but like i said i will offer any help i can.
