Need input on WY deer

I've got max deer points and was trying to decide what to do this yr. I'm a NR close enough to scout 101 or 102 a couple times over the summer if I put in there, also been thinking about the 128 hunt. I'm kind of thinking I want to burn the points this yr so I can maybe get a Region G tag every 1 or 2 yrs. Of course a lot of folks have max points so there's no guarantee. What do you guys think? I need opinions...

If you absolutely have to burn your points this year you would probably be better off looking in to different units. Last year even in the special draw 101 was about 23% and 102 was 14%. Of course they were much lower in the regular draw, about 6 and 12%. The odd should be a little better this year, but probably not very much different. Odds are you probably won't draw, but...someone has too, maybe you. You really don't have that many points over, have you thought about just drawing a G tag next year? That would be my advice. If you are going to focus on that unit anyway, why not start now. I may be able to help you get started if you do.

I hunted 102 last year, it is a good hunt and I'd love to go back but I don't think its worth several long years of waiting again. I think I'd put it down as first choice to give yourself a chance and then region G or another choice as a second. If you can hunt an area often you'll find some good hunting elsewhere. Good luck in the draw

Your not gonna draw region G as a second choice. H you will and K you will but definately not G.

Sit tall in the saddle, hold your head up high, keep your eyes fixed to where the trail meets the sky...

Stick with it. If you don't hold out and draw 102 or 101 then you never will. You can hunt G every couple of years forever. Why not just do your once in a lifetime hunt. I think in the long run you won't regret it. I am only familiar with 102, I think there are a lot of bucks, and a chance for a giant. You have the same chances in Region G, but I think you will see more bucks in 102. I would love to hunt that unit once in my life because it is different than the places I typically hunt. That's just my opinion. You may never have max points in wyoming again.

yeah I didn't think about how Wy does their draw, a second choice wouldn't work for that.

Does your partner have max points if not you can put in with family or friend and both draw for Region G.

I would keep trying for 102. Its a fun hunt and you will see a lot of bucks. The thing I don't like is the game and fish keeps adding to the number of tags(400). If you bowhunt it, you will have a great hunt, very few hunters. I had the tag in 2004 and killed a good deer. I think when I had the tag, they only gave out 325 tags. You should be able to find a 170 class buck fairly easy. But there is some studs out there. The season runs the last two weeks of october. That last week, the big guys come out of the woodworks getting ready for the rut. Good luck in the draw. Heck, if you draw, Im always game to help a guy out and find a good deer.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-01-10 AT 08:03AM (MST)[p] Hey guys, thanks for the replies.

Boomer, I know what you saying as far as draw odds. I thought I had a good chance for elk this yr. According to 2009, I had a 50% chance to get a 38 type 9 elk tag this year w/ max points but that didn't happen:(. I've never hunted G but want to eventually. I figure any tag you can draw every couple yrs ups the chances for success.

As far as the person I usually hunt with, my Dad only has two points so it wouldn't be a party application and I'm pretty sure he couldn't handle the terrain in G either. Is 102 much better than 101? If I'm gonna stick with it I like the idea of less competition in the field.

102 has more deer, but also more hunters. The deer in 101 are more in pockets, but there are less hunters chasing them. If you dad has difficulty getting around, these are both great units. There are tons of roads and most of the terrain is pretty reasonable, at least compared to the Greys River area. Good luck, I hope it works out for you. I may be a bit jaded on the draw odds. I have drawn 1, 102 tag and I am 38 years old. My daughter drew her first two years of hunting when she was 14 and again 15. Just goes to show you, anyone can draw, anytime.

I would agree with gcox98 on these two units. I have been in both and in my opinion, neither warrant long waits for tags. I just did not see the quality, older bucks. Way to much easy access and quad trails.

You know, I had those same thoughts when I had max points. In the end I came to the realization you either sit an apply, and apply and apply...or you hunt. I chose to hunt. I think its a very safe statement that you have a better chance of killing a great buck by blowing your points and hunt G every other year for the next ten years vs. waiting out the point pool and hunting the so called banner units once.

And here's two results from that decision.
