Colorado unit 22 this year or wait for 61. i have 6 points, 50% odds of drawing a 22 4th season last year . or should i wait 3 more years and hunt 61? looking for a 180+ buck {arent we all?} i need to decide what unit in colorado before applying in wyoming. anyone have advice for me.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-05-10 AT 05:44AM (MST)[p]I hunted unit 22 about 15 years ago archery season. Saw tons of deer. At that time it was over the counter and there were also tons of hunters and ATV's buzzing around. Initially the traffic drove us nots and we thought it would scare all the deer away, but as we settle throughout the week and got more patient we started turning up more deer and a few nice bucks. We would be tuckered below a ridgeline 50 yards off the trail glassing a pile of deer and a big buck and every 10 minutes an ATV would buzz by and the deer didn't even care. They would be holed up in that thick oak brush and appear and disappear at their hearts content. I shot a pretty large framed and massive 4x3 that hangs high on my wall at the cabin. I never scored him, but will the next time I'm there.

I have hunted 22 twice in the last 4 years and its an O.K unit but if I had the patience to get 6pts, and wanted a 180+ buck, I would not use them there even on a 4th season hunt. There are some good bucks taken in 22 when you get the weather to move some mature bucks into the unit, but with the late season dates this year you could get a better unit for the 3rd season and still have the late, some rutting activity dates. With milder winters the last two years the populations in some of the areas with better genetics should be rebounding. I would look at the 3rd season in units 30,44,54 & 55 if I had 6 points and wanted a 180+ buck.

>Geez! A report of the
>unit from 15 years ago?
> Helpful. I'm sure
>not much has changed...

A lot more useful than your post. Geez indeed.

Looking at raw numbers, if you assume that only the same people apply for a 4th season tag in 22, you should get a tag. only 1 person in front of you. But of course, more may apply....

Of course they lowered the tag numbers from 9 to 5 last year. No telling what they will do this year. Might check with the local DOW people to see if they think they will maintain numbers or go up or down?

As far as 61, elk hunters may have only seen 1 deer, but lots of others report lots of good deer. Just have to look in the right places.

You might look at the raw data on the hunts odds (top of this page). Pull up the unit, then click on the hunt you want to see how many people with each point total apply. Gives you a better sense of your real odds.
