Medusa, aka "Changeling"

What a difference, from a crazy non-typical 12 months ago to a perfect giant 22-23" forked-horn. I thought I new something about antlers and genetics, but at 4 1/2 years old he all of a sudden changed to a typical. This should stump many people.

Thanks, Mike

That's pretty unique. The casual observer would never think that is the same buck. Thanks for keeping us up to date on his development.

I have fallowed your posts on this deer and found them very interesting.

He must have exorcised a demon in him that was trying to grow an extra set of horns.

Come Sept when the rut starts, I bet he wont be breaking off his points like last year.
Hard to explain this phenom. Keep posting pics. Thanks

Awesome photos once again! I also enjoyed your posts about Medusa last year.

Not to get to far off track but, I have seen something similar with elk before. My brother has 2 years of sheds off a bull that was a 380 gross 6x6, then the next year he was ~415 gross 7x9, then the following year an archer killed him and he was back to being a typical 6x6 that netted 388.

My gosh...llloooookkkkkk at those bases! Those coke cans haven't changed!

I hesitate to even bring this up because of all the controversy, but these pics of this blacktail with such drastic changes of antler growth from one year to the next could shed some light on the whole spider bull deal. Maybe it is possible the spider bull looked completely different the year before he was killed and then turned into the freak he was when shot???

I am not saying either way on the spider bull, but it is interesting to think about and actually see evidence that it can and does happen with this deer.

I was looking into my crystal ball...shaazaam..the cause...global warming due to G.W. Bushs foreign policy.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-21-10 AT 11:14AM (MST)[p]Cool buck for sure. Now - just to remind us all, you are identifying him as the same buck by the conspicuous spot on his right ear, correct?

Proverbs 21:19 (why I hunt!)

IMO this is not the same deer. Yes it does have the same spot but look at the rest of its facial features!

check out the colors and also the dot in this ear and the black edges! I am not saying it is not the same deer but I am saying I very well could not be!

YOU AINT GOING TO KILL A BIG BUCK UNLESS THERE IS A BIG BUCK WHERE YOUR HUNTING!!!

its the same buck. both ears birth marks match with out a doubt.

keep posting pictures of this changeling buck. awesome.

Nets are for fish!!

elk hunter maybe your on to somethin!

show me i think its the same buck looks the same to me, just without the extras, same antler config mole and other markings.

really odd and interesting to see. makes you wonder what the deal is i hope he makes it to see the change next year!

thanks for sharing keep em going

Pretty cool to be able to document all the changes to this buck . Always look forward to seeing your pictures .

This question may have already been brought up earlier in the year, but did anyone find his antlers this spring? And if so, can we see some pictures?

One of my daughters and one of my sons have birthmarks in the same place as my wife and mother in law and they are similar in shape. With that mark being round it would be hard to discern it from another round birthmark. Not saying its not the same buck just saying it would not be an astronomical miracle if it was and they are related.

I have asked this question on abnormal antler growth and have been told I did not know what I was talking about, or was getting my deer mixed up. Seems to be a hot topic and most people seem to think it has to do with the buck being injured. I feel this might be one cause, but I feel there may be other reasons. one example is a nice 4x4 I watched one year and could not get. The next year it was a nice 4 point on one side and non typical on the other. I got the buck during archery season and could not find any sign of injury. There has been about 5 non typical bucks I have let go hoping they would be bigger the next year. Only to find typical bucks with the same markings. Given these were all blacktails and in areas (A-zone) where the do not migrate. I feel blacktails are easier to find (the same buck) year after year due to there small home area. I feel some bucks may have this non typical growth through out their life due to genetics or some other reason. I hope you can find this deer next year and get another picture (if you don't put a tag on him).

Thanks
Bill
