Colorado Unit 49

I may have an opportunity to deer hunt Unit 49 (Oct. 23-31). I have elk hunted it in the past and did well, just never saw many deer. We usually hunted around the Buffalo Peaks area or Weston Pass. Is 49 known as a good Muley unit? Thanks for any input. I have enjoyed reading y'alls post and looking at the pic's! Hopefully I will have a good report and pic's to add to the forum.

( I did a SEARCH for Unit 49, but it came up blank.)

I have spent a lot of time in unit 49 and know it pretty well but I have seen very few deer in that unit. I don't know why there aren't more, it seems like good country for deer. I've seen a few decent bucks in there over the years but they are far and few between.

Marley, thanks for the reply. Yea, few and far between is what I have experienced too. I thought I might have just not been in the right areas to see deer. Oh well, I guess it beats not hunting the mountains at all (I was counting on getting an elk tag, but only deer is available for me). Maybe I'll get lucky.

I'm taking my 17 yr old nephew and his dad to 49 elk first rifle season. Any tips on how to find the elk, never been there before. I don't have a tag so I'll have plenty of time to look for deer.

Stockchopper,
I don't really have any tips about finding elk in 49. I'm no expert, I'm from Texas! I think the elk more or less found me! We have killed elk in the lower areas (10,000') and above the timberline (13,500'). Every part of the unit seems to have elk.
The best thing about first rifle is that you won't see many other hunters. Also there is still a lot of bugling going on.
I have had good luck with a cow call. Good luck!
