I know top guides that hunt this general area archery and muzzeloader. They hunt the steep canyons with inclines so steep that the elk mostly travel the trails. The guides in this area scout and find their bulls by calling. Then they set up the hunter on the trail they expect the bull to travel comming to the call. The hunter is stationed/setup half way inbetween the bull and the caller/guide. This could be several hundred yards apart depending on terrain/cross canyon elk mostly...comming to the call.
The hunter/shooter then ambushes the elk as far away from the caller as possible as the elk is focusing on the call noise. The elk do not expect the shooter this far from the call. These elk are hunter savy...... There are 400 plus bulls in those steep canyons. Scout and find the wallow's and water from the small springs in the area if you have time.
If you have the money hire a guide that knows the canyons and trails in the area you will hunt. If you are not familiar with the country you will not learn enough to kill a quality bull or any bull unless you are real lucky. Those bulls get big in there for a reason....The elk in this area are the most savy/skittish/mean bulls you will ever encounter. Theya are not affraid to charge a hunter at close range.
