Howdy,
I am looking for some 300 mag info pertaining to Hornady Bullets. Specifically the 180 gr SST etc. I'm curious as to the performance of these bullets on deer, moose etc. I have used Hornadys in my 7mm-08 and they worked well but I have not tried any in the "308" stuff. Anxious to try out my new Tikka 300 mag on some Muley's / Moose this fall. Its a real tack driver with factory Win. 180 Super X's from the local Wallymart but will start reloading as soon as my dies show up.
Thanks for any help,

i have a couple .300 win mags and use hornady's, but use 165 gr. use the boat tail soft points. just the normal every day hornady bullets. work real well. hold together, real accurate, mushroom great. use it primarilly for elk. the load i have shoots real flat and hits like a log truck. loaded a bunch for a friend who has taken several moose in alaske with them and he said they work great. a 180 may be a little better, but i wouldn't change my load if i was gonna shoot something bigger than an elk.

I love Hornady bullets. They are very accurate in all my rifles and I have never had one animal complain about bullet performance. Most fell where they stood. I like the SST's on deer but would not use one for elk. They are pretty frangible. Put one through the ribs and it aint going anywhere. But I'm not sure they would break through a shoulder bone at 75 yards with a .300 win mag. Maybe, but maybe not. I think the standard Hornady Interloct is better for larger game.

Thanks BigPig,
That is pretty much what I have experienced with the SST's in my 7mm-08. I loved them on deer but the Interlocks were definately the way to go for the larger stuff !
I was just wondering if the larger "30" SST would hold together better on the bigger critters. But it sounds like they perform the same.
Thanks Again !

BCWILL,

I have a 300 win mag and use 190 grain Hornady boat-tail spire points for all big game. I have killed antelope, deer, elk and bear with just devastating effects. Many have been one shot kills from 30 to 300 yards. I have found the interlock did not keep the lead in the jacket though. My buddy drove this bullet through a black bear just last week and he found the jacket in the far side shoulder without the lead core....but the bear died a few feet from where he shot it. I use 66.5 grains of IMR 4350 and the bullet travels at 2950 fps out of my 26 inch barrel. I see no need to ever change. I know this load intimately and can tell you where that bullet will travel in the wind cold heat etc. I like the heavier bullet because wind drift is less and the bone-breaking energy is better downrange than lighter bullets. I get 1.00 to 1.25 inch groups at 100 yards.
