I'm looking for a 54cal. heavy conical for Elk. It can't have any plastic (ie.sabot or Black Belt type). It's to meet a states regulation requirements. What shoots well for you guys?

Henry: I don't believe that Black Belts have been banned in any state. Why don't you jump on the website: www.bigbore.com and ask them if their bullets have been banned anywhere. If they have let me know, ok?

bluelk,
Thanks for the reply. Here is what Oregon says about bullets in 2002.
"It is illegal to hunt with or possess jacketed bullets, sabots, and bullets with plastic or synthetic bases during muzzleloading-only seasons. Round balls and conical lead or lead alloy bullets with a length that dose not exceed twice the diameter, and cloth, paper or felt patches are allowed."
Dumb rule. That being said, what brand should I try? I want to go heavy weight because it's for elk and I have a 1 in 24 barrel. Suggestions please.

I dont know how they would shoot with that fast of a twist, but I shoot TC Maxiballs 430 gr. Based on your requirements they are legal. This load with 100gr Pyrodex punched right thru my buddy's 320" elk at 65 yds.

Henry: You are absolutely right. That is a stupid rule, but it appears to be another of Oregon's attempts to keep everything traditional. I was warning everybody that this was coming!!

Read BigPig's post. I think he has the best answer for you.

Henry, like Bigpig say's, Im not sure about that twist,But the big T/C maxi's work well for me in both my T/C renegades and my Remington in-line.

I like the pre-lubed maxi's ( Lazy, I guess)All I shoot is a 54 cal. I live in Oregon and hated to give up my saboted Barnes expanders! Oh well, the maxi balls work well! Give them a try!

Regards, WILL..

Henry,

For what it's worth I have shot prelubed Buffalo Bullets out of my CVA Hawken and had great success with them. A bit difficult to push down the barrel, but I get real good accuracy and knock down power with them. Taken a number of whitetails with them and none of them went more than a few yards after being hit.

430 grain maxiballs (prelubed) have worked well in my 54 cal T/C Renegade. 110 grain pyrodex. I have since changed to blackbelt bullets which have worked better in accuracy and bullet drop.

venor, ergo sum (I hunt, therefore I am)

Colorado mentions nothing about wheather it is jacked or not.
and it also states that a patched bullet is allowed.
I have tried this on my sabits.
by replacing the plastic sleave W/a patch. no good, bad groups
I us 50 cal. buf. bullets. and found I get better groups W/ 107 grains of podwer
