Longbow Nevada Late tag

After buying this point, that point and the other point with countless UNSUCCESSFUL as my only returns, I had the fortune to draw a late tag in Nevada. I drew the unit 10 Ruby Mountains longbow hunt. I'll be tackling it with my Sapphire hawk longbow in hand. This should be interesting. I literally know nothing of the area, except for the occasional drive through Elko, and the occasional drool over goat pics from the Ruby's. I think I have seen some Fatrooster pics of the mountians on here in the past as well. This should be interesting. As an admin for the main hunting forum here in Washington, I am familiar with all the not looking for honey holes but where do I hunt speeches. I am trying to shy away from the same. What I would love to hear is what to expect about the weather in November around Elko, or the Ruby's and if the deer are still in the mountains or out in the scrub. If anyone wants to share pointers, they would be welcomed but not expected by any means. I'm a little discouraged about the harvest statistics, but assume thats becasue the deer are hard to close the distance on in that open country. I am hoping this wasn't a mistake as its my favorite time to be photographing bucks here in Washington. I plan to make the best of it. I've purchased all the BLM maps of the hunting "units", and will probably try to narrow down the USGS map selection a bit, since literally a hundred of them will cover all that country. YIKES...... Wish me luck.

You can use a compound bow on that hunt. The weather should be cold and you should be prepared for snow. Harrison pass is a good spot to start go to the east side of the range and hunt the canyons to the north. The rut should be in full swing so find the ladies and you will find the bucks. Be it makes it harder due to all the eyes.

The rubys are awesome but the hunt is weather dependant if you get snow you will be in for a treat and lots of deer between 140-160, congrats on the tag ill pm some info when I get a chance on where to hunt,
Nmbighorn

I've been hunting with the longbow successfully for a couple years now, so thats what I will be using. That would be awesome nmbighorn. There is a ton of ground to cover thats for sure.

I had the tag in '04 and I hunted the end of season. I woke up the day after Thanksgiving and there was 6" of new snow in Elko that first morning with temps in the single digits to low teens.

I hunted roughly 4 hours and killed a 24" 165 BC buck on the backside of Elko mountain. I stayed a few days and looked at gobs of deer up on Harrison Pass. You'll see tons and tons of deer.

Good Luck it's a good tag.

Thanks Hammit, thats good to hear. Some folks seemed really negative about the tag and I wondered what I had gotten myself into.

I really appreciate the couple pms I've gotten. That really helps me out and I hope I can do well for you guys. Let me know if you guys ever get to Washington or put in and draw OIL species up here. I really appreciate the help as being from where I am at, scouting is kinda limited, and even more so as it all changes because of weather and rut. THANKS!

The Ruby's aren't what they used to be, but there's still some dandy bucks. I've been there in early october and had neg 5 temps, so you can count on cold temps on that later hunt. If you are after a real good buck, I'd focus on the East Humboldts north of secret pass, and would start in the lower PJ country. Do your homework on access, there's some good access that most folks believe to be private. There will be plenty of bucks to stalk that most archers would be proud to kill, don't let the naysayers fool you! Good luck and pack your long john's!
