Hello everyone I am not really new on here but I havent been on in awhile and forgot my login info. Anyways I have a region H tag and was wondering if anyone had any info that might help me and my step dad? I mean any info trailhead, lake, anything? We usually hunt in different areas and have no idea where to start. I am not looking for a honey hole or anything like that just a place that maybe we can go scout and check out. Thanks in advance.

jarheadhunter, region H is a big area. I would call the local BIO. There are a lot of backpackers in region H. You need to go up high to find the bucks. Hoback and that area still hold some big bucks. Get a map. You might want to skip the opener and go a little later due to the crowds. The hunting will still be good. Quest

Thanks for the good info. I have the maps just kinda looking for a point in the right direction. I know a few Fish cops so I will give them a call and see what they say. Thanks again.

If you're not planning on scouting, then just pick one of the highest ridges or peak and head for one of them. Most of the bucks live as high as they can get, and most of the high ridges have just as good of a chance of holding a taker buck as another.
I have been to many areas up there and it's all about the same. I will say though, there are not many real big bucks up there. If you can scout, then you do the same as I said and then hunt where you find the best buck you can.

Greyback ridge, Clause, Lookout, Bare Hole, Rams Horn, Red Creek, etc......It's all about the same. It all gets hunted hard. The opener is always a mad house.

Awsome thanks for the info. I am sure thats what we will do is just find the farthest highest peak and put the old Swaro HD spotter to good use. I know you have taken a few good bucks in Wyoming Brian. That double you guys had awhile back was pretty rare and I am glad you got video of it to show us. I will head up this weekend on our first scout trip. If I get any good pics through the scope I will be sure to share them with you.

Thanks

Region h is mostly wilderness the part that is not gets jammed packed with hunters. No matter how high or how far you go in you will not be able to get away from the crowds. Alot of people say go later in the season there is less people and yeah that was true 10 years ago but people caught on and now it doesnt matter when you go there is still tons of people everywhere. Its amazing that a area that steep and rugged could have so many hunters but it does. To many people go there with dreams of killing a giant cause of all the publicity that area has got over the years but i am sad to say the glory days of regin G and H are long gone and will never be seen again.

You know you might and probably are right SSakitas. I never said that I was going there for a monster deer. The biggest deer that I have ever shot to date is a 19" 4x4 that I shot in area 102 of all places when I was 15 on my first hunt. So to me anything bigger than that will be a trophy. I could be happy with a 20+" deer right now. Not to mention the fact that I have only shot 2 deer in my life. Thats the bad thing about asking stuff like this you always have somebody like you who pretty much doesn't have anything to say that will help me out. I mean you don't think I know that there is a butt load of hunters? There is hunters everywhere you go now and it's just going to keep getting worse. My grandpa tells me stories all the time about how it use to be. All I can do is put in the time and effort and eventually I will be rewarded for my efforts. Will it be this year in region H? Who knows but I have the tag, and I am going to try. So I guess thanks for your helpful advice...

It will be crowded, but with some walking and some of the above advice, you'll likely be able to exceed your 20" mark opening day. Lots of bucks in that class and slightly better, but not many over 180" (or even 170" for that matter). If you are somewhat picky and willing to work some, a 24" wide 160" class buck is very achievable.

See thats what I am talking about COSA. Thanks for the advice and motivation. I hate those people that just get on here and all they do is knock you down saying you wont see anything and theres too many hunters. I bet its just because they are hunting from the road and thats all they do see is hunters.

Hey Jarheadhunter you dont have to come off like that all I was trying to do is let you know what you should expect. The reason behind that is region G and H has got alot of press over the years as an area to kill huge bucks and Many guys go there expecting to see many huge deer and kill one but there hunts are ruined when reality sets in. I just dont want you to go there and Have a bad hunt cause it not what you expected. I wasnt trying to knock you down I was just stating the fact about G and H thats it( not saying that you were after a giant sorry its just that most people that go there are after a big one). And please dont lump me in with road hunters. I have spent more time backpacking those mountains than you could possably imagen and I started backpack hunting G and H before backpack hunting was the cool thing to do like it is now. I could have even pointed you in the right direction to find a good buck and was going to tell you flew off the handle.

If you're looking for a 20-22 inch 4-point, there are a good number of them running around up there. Like I said, pick one of those high ridges and be there before light everyday, glass hard, hunt until dark. Do that for a few days and you will see some 20-inch bucks.
It's a fun place to hunt regardless what you kill. Physically demanding, but........fun. My favorite place to hike around.

Yeah you might of been telling me what I should expect which is ok. You also never once said anything that might help me out which is why I posted in the first place. Anyways not like I want to set on here in a pissing match with you. So I am sorry if I hurt your feelings and you can keep your pointers to yourself. Thanks

Oh and thanks to everyone else who posted good advice for me. I have a friend who I didn't know who has been hunting up in G & H for the last 10 years or so and he has gratiously invited me to go with him. He said they usually find a bunch of decent bucks. I will let everyone know how it goes. Thanks again Brian and everyone else that responded.

Jarhead.......I don't think SSitkas was trying to stir anything at all! I think he has hunted the area in the past and knows how challenging it is and how dissapointing it can be to think you are all alone and then you go a hundred yards and find 20 people in the same basin! H is a tough hunt thats reality, I'm not gonna sit here and make it smell like roses when it smells more like tuna..... Yes, if you are looking for a 20 inch buck then that is very attainable and you shouldn't have any problems putting one down. I would suggest you look in between the Grayback and the Hoback range......maybe up Willowcreek. A lot of us or maybe its just me think when we are hunting western Wyoming we are looking to shoot something in the 27+ range but sometimes that can be a tall order. Never the less prove us wrong and kill a toad!

Sit tall in the saddle, hold your head up high, keep your eyes fixed to where the trail meets the sky...

Yeah I was probably just PMS-ing yesturday and took it all to litteraly. Its good to know that it will be challenging and I mean I wasn't expecting a trophy hunt. I just love to get out there with friends and family and take in the sites. We are planning on going up around the Hoback area we have a few spots pinpointed. We will be going scouting next weekend so I will see how it goes. Thanks for the info. Sorry again SSitkas.

Hey bucks......ya think jarhead would need to know that little spot you mentioned requires a 2,000 foot climb from the trailhead just to get to the H region and if he happens to shoot a buck over the top in the H region, bringing it back up to the top at 9,500 feet is gonna be some work.

Also that ridgetop looks like a KOA campground come opening week. It ain't a picnic! Like was mentioned, that place can be absolute hell and all you see are 20 in 3 x 4s at the best.

Just don't get your hopes up, it may hurt when they come down.

Good luck everyone & be careful

Yeah thanks for the heads up nocal. I dont know if I am going to try that specific area or not but, I am sure that wherever I go it will be hard hiking. I look forward to have to worry about packing an animal out. Its a good problem to have IMO. As for the people I know there will be a lot of them. There is a lot of people in any general unit and special for that matter now a days. I hunted a unit for elk last year with way more people than what will be in H and nobody else in my camp even saw an elk. I did however go him with a nice 5x6 that was one of the biggest we saw leave that area. The reason I got the elk is because when everybody else was sitting back at camp I was out looking for elk. I am just going to put in the time and effort and I will be rewarded for my efforts.

Another piece of advise...if your goal is 20" don't be intimidated by the people the first few days. Hang in there, try to find a unique vantage point and hunt all day. Most of the young bucks will be in the high, open country and will move around due to the pressure.

If you want a toad I believe your best chance is to drop down a thousand feet and hunt in thinker cover. You won't be able to glass very far, you'll see much less hunters, fewer deer but a chance at an old wise buck.

Ha ha Nocal, sounds like you have had the pleasure of hunting the great reagion H. Who is to say he has to use Pickle pass or the trail that takes you through the outfitters camp? He could always come in from the bottom couldn't he?? Maybe this guy has horses maybe he is a go getter like a lot of us and doesn't care where the buck is as long as he gets a crack at it. I know a group of people that huted H last year and killed 3 or 4 bucks ranging from 22 inches to 27 around that general area......it can be done, having a little luck on your side couldn't help either though.....

Sit tall in the saddle, hold your head up high, keep your eyes fixed to where the trail meets the sky...

The Ruttinbull will be there too. H deer tag and an antelope tag in hand. I likely wont be up high, but sneakin around real low.

Good Luck to ya Jarhead.

Thanks for all the help guys. I am going up scouting this weekend so we will see how it looks for this year. Good luck to all of you as well. Hopefully we will all have some nice pictures to share.

Yeh Bucks, I've been there a few times. Actually heading there this fall, just not doing the croud thing & waiting 'til the end of the season.

I suppose our man looking for access to Willow Crk could come in from the north on the trail and use the camp in the bottom; or the Cliff crk road, be in the H region all the time hunting and if he wants Willow crk, its only a 3,000 ft climb over the top; or...... There's a reason the Hoback has a reputation for being ugly........it is!

Be careful guys and again, good luck,

nocal
