Gotta be honest. The velvet looks to perfect and the late season cape just don't match. It's a nice cape and nice antlers, but I don't think they go together.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-13-10 AT 07:06PM (MST)[p]those are some nice shedz! i think the mount as a whole looks great man! But im just not too much a fan of fake velvet. .. . just me though. you ever have them scored?? ima take a long shot and guess them at 215ish (just starting to try and get the whole "field judging" and "photo-judging" thing down. .. .)

I agree that is a nice set of sheds.

I also agree that it just doesn't look right, fake velvet, and a late cape.

I have also not been a fan of the fake velvet.

Marcial

the velvet looks fake of course, it can be roughed up with a small wire brush on dremel tool, up and down the veins and ridges. there are guys out there doing this and you have a hard time telling if its real or fake.
the headset ears neck and shoulder dont seem to fit together right to my eyes.
the cape isnt what i would expect to see with a velvet buck.
goog mule deer taxidermy is hard to come by in my opinion, im in the process of getting one redone right now that just wasnt right even though it was done by a reputable outfit. it either looks like a live deer or it doesnt theres not much in between.

You guys keep saying that the late cape (which is actually an EARLY rifle cape) doesnt look right on a buck with velvet?

What happens when you shoot a buck like this? Scrap the cape and get a nasty summer cape? lol
I have heard that you can ruff the velvet up a bit to make it more natural but the taxidermist I took it to had never done it before and didnt want to mess mine up trying it out for the first time.
The buck is 35.5" wide....the bucks right side scored 100 5/8" before velvet and the left side I never scored before I got it mounted....looks about the same size maybe a little bigger...with a 25" spread credit (longest beam) I think he would score right around 230"ish.

I really like it. The cape looks great with the velvet. Up here frost is normally hitting the high country by mid Aug and I've been snowed out on Sept 1 numerous times. That normally is when they start shreddin the trees but I have seen the some still in velvet on the 15th of Sept. Certainly by then the summer red cape is long gone and they are wearing the winter gray. I think the idea of putting velvet on sheds is really cool. I've got a 225 white and chewed deadhead that would look sweet in velvet.

Remember, you asked what we thought.......

I appreciate the work involved, but it does not look anywhere near real. Hope you don't have too much invested.

Not a fan of Velvet, BUT I like the way it looks on your sheds.
I think it turned out good.

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".

velvet needs to be a little rougher and the main beams could be turned in a little and the spread could tilt in a little and the rack could set a little higher up above the ears and it would take a lot of the fake look out of it, but unless I saw the buck on the hoof I couldn't tell you how true to form the mount is.

I like the mount just the way you have it
I shaggy summer coat would have ruined it

The fake velvet looks like fake velvet. Other than that, and the awful taxidermy...nice sheds.

This is only the 3rd deer I have seen with that fake, green velvet. One of the other ones is a 197" typical... The Green tint, and the unblemished texture of the fake velvet doesn't look real at all, and I hate it.
The cape, and the sheds are awesome. The Fake velvet ruins it for me...

I agree they should have stayed just a pair of shed's. The taxi job is very poor imo horns are off and way to tilted look's way to fake.

YB, gnarly buck Dude! What have you been smoking? Oh wait, that was your buddy.:)

Maybe the lighting makes the fake velvet look green? I would peel it off if it was mine.

It looks like your cape is an early winter cape. One of the short hair greys, just after the shaggy red is gone but before the long winter coat is in. It's my personal favorite look for mule deer. I love how the hair has a nice sheen to it. I'm not a big fan of velvet mounts fake or real. Your cape looks similar to my 08 muzzle loader buck taken in late september. Notice that my buck had not quite finished rubbing all the velvet off.

I immagine if you stripped the velvet and used some WAM your mount would look similar to mine. Either way that is an awesome set of sheds.

I don't mind the cape to much with the velvet antlers as I've seen bucks in late September in velvet with grey, thicker capes. After years of doing reproduction velvet you'd think Research Mannikins could get their standard muley velvet color right. the green tint is nasty, but a good taxidermist can rough it up a bit and add paint color to them to make them look very natural. also something about the ear butt placement and antlers on the mount doesn't look right to me. But they are a great set of sheds

Was the velvet on them when you found the sheds?

I don't like velvet mounts to begin with, but this really looks bad. It looks like thy have some kind of green mold on them and there is something about the shape of the head that doesn't look quite right.

But if you like it - more power to you.

Good eye. The antlers are set too low on the head, which moved the earbutts down too low, and too far back. Now he has ears growing out of his neck.

I will admit the idea was solid, but the execution was far from perfect. The idea of velvet on sheds is good, lots of people mess them up with stain and they are junk after that.

Take the sheds to someone who is good with a dremel and an airbrush. Unfortunately the cape is toast IMO. It has been trimmed to short around the bases of the antlers for it to be fixed. Mounting sheds is tough, the antler angles are hard to match when you don't have a skull plate. These look to low and angled too much IMO.

Never liked the FAKE velvet look myself. The roughing them up idea was my first thought. My second thought was..WOW! That is sad that that is what they are passing off as taxidermy now days. If it were me, I'd ask for my money back. The taxi work sucks! That's why I took some classes and do my own, I like my mounts to look real!

I think the buck looks great and some of these dudes need to chill out a bit. Its a good looking mount thanks for posting
