It was a surprise to find out that my father and I had drawn a limited entry book cliffs archery deer tags this year instead of the Rocky mtn goat tag that I thought was a sure thing. Due to health reasons my father and long time huntin pard was unable to be with me on the hunt.
Countless hours of practicing with a new Hoyt Maxxis 35 proved to be just the ticket when the opportunity of a lifetime presented itself. Days 1 and 2 on opening weekend were nothing short of amazing as I found myself looking over numerous bucks trying to decide how long I would hold out for mister big. Being an official Pope and Young measurer I found myself being very critical and selective. This also allowed me to enjoy a wonderful time of year on the mountain. Monday morning looked to be less than a stellar day due to the full moon that was taking place.
I was soon proven wrong when I spotted a huge buck off in the pinions and junipers. I knew without binoculars that this was the buck I was after. A short stalk later and I found my pins were settled on the buck that I hoped I would be able place my tag on. The arrow found its mark and a short time later my friend, Craig and I were staring at my dream buck. My Hoyt and Axis arrow had taken care of business and the buck of my dreams was mine. This buck green scored 188 5/8 gross and net green scores 183 3/8 P&Y. My buck will be officially scored after the required 60 day drying period.
So Dad, this one's for you. Thanks for all the memories.
My daughter was also notified that she had finally drawn a Book cliffs rifle deer tag after putting in for 8 years. I'm sure I will find myself on the "Books" at least once more this fall.
