My dad hunted and eventually killed a huge mule deer near Meeker CO. He loved the area and told me about it often as I grew up. It became a legend. Now he wants to go back for one more hunt before dying. I don't know enough about the area to plan a hunt, private tresspass or guided,. The area was near Strawberry and you had to cross a river/large creek to get to the private ranch he hunted on. It was a sheep ranch, rim rocks, 8000+ on top, alfalfa in valleys, etc. Of course, would love to find the same ranch but something close by would help. I can get more information about the exact location but wanted to first find a solid person in the area who could help me, guide us?, to start the planning process for next fall. Willing to offer a coastal blacktail hunt, black bear hunt, salmon fishing on the ocean, or even a sight seeing trip to watch some great white sharks on the california coast for your time and efforts.
Thanks,

i have hunted all around meeker and have had a blast doing it. its been about two years since i have hunted it, but depending on when your dad hunted it, a lot has changed! i believe strawberry is before meeker off of hwy 64 and believe on that side of the hwy some of it is private but a lot of places offer trespassing fees, can be a little spendy. i would myself not spend the money, because you guys would have success close to the area you mentioned. i actually was debating on going back their next year, just havent decided yet....hope this helps some!

Thanks! Do you think winter kill has been a big factor there the last few years? I know it may cost us which is why I am starting a year early.

I've hunted the country around Meeker many times and always enjoyed the trip!! Your description of the country rings no bells but i applaud your early efforts to help your Dad's last big hunt be a grand one!!! Good form and great luck to both of you!!

Thanks guys,
I appreciate the sentiment Joey. My dad starting me on hunting when I was little and it has become a major part of our lives together. I will start researching the Louisiana Purchase Ranch, maybe I will get lucky.
Thanks again!

I haven't looked for it, but I've heard that the Meeker Chamber of Commerce website has a bunch of stuff on it. http://meekerchamber.com/\
9 outfitters listed on their site.

Also, Meeker is very pro-hunting (big income for the area), and if you call them, they may be able to help you out. I'm sure that they have a list of outfitters in the area.

You may also want to call the BLM (listed in the above link).

not sure where exacly you are talking about but have hunted the white river national forest on the north east side of meeker. lots of public land with good deer and elk. If you hunt there get both tags there are some alfalfa fields in the meeker valley and they herd sheep in the forest during the sumer but get them out of there befor the rifel hunt.

If you ever get over that way, make sure you stop by the Meeker hotel. The mounts they have there are awesome.
If you have to go out of your way a little its worth the stop ! I have a few picture around from the last time i was there, the elk and deer have some great history.

Thanks guys for all your advice! The chamber of commerce is very useful and does list most guides and outfitters but I am still looking for a local who really knows the area. I hear the hotel is awesome, my dad visited it 20 yeqars ago and it has always been on my list as a must do if I am in the area, can't wait.
Thanks Again!
