Ok, I hunted unit 33 a few years ago during the 3rd season. It was one of the most difficult hunts I had ever been on. We hardly saw does and only one small buck. This year I drew a 2nd season tag hoping that would increase my odds since I would get a crack at them before they get pushed. I mostly hunted up high a few years ago. Any suggestions? Should I stay up high or hit the lower country first? I'm not looking for a monster just a decent 4 point. Anyone with 33 knowledge that is willing to help would be greatly appreciated. Send a PM if you prefer.

I grew up in 33, its more of an elk unit than a deer unit. If
I were you I'd hunt the lower country in the oak brush, especially if it snows. The NF gets pounded with hunters and there's not much for deer up there.
The lower stuff should hold more deer and has less pressure. There are a few good deer left but you have to work to get them.

wouldn't hurt to call the local biologist for that area and ask about the migration route

I also have a 2nd season deer tag for 33. i will be hunting elk and deer. i have hunted the unit before with friends that always hunt the 2nd season. they have killed some really nice deer but they are few and far between. we basically just run upon them as we are hunting elk. be prepared to see lots of people as this area is hunted hard. good luck to you and maybe we can both put one on the wall.

Thanks for all the input. To mywifehateshuntingseason, do you mind posting up some pictures of the deer your group has killed over the years? What area do you guys usually hunt? High or low? Thanks for all the comments. Anymore info is greatly appreaciated.

Sorry Fuzzy, I am overseas at work and I don't have any pictures of the deer they have killed. The biggest was a 5x5 that i would guess in the 170's, 180's range and it was 4 years ago. They will only be 2 of us this year. We will be camping in the clinetops and hunting both high and low. In years past I have seen deer in both locations. But like I said earlier, LOTS of people so get on your walking shoes and get away from the atv trails and roads. Good luck to you.
