Looking for public land buck and ones that you didn't pay trespass fees or a guide for. Tell how much time was spent in scouting and hunting your buck.

This is the buck I got. I did no scouting and it was the 1st time and day of hunting this area. Just plain luck!!

Public land, no guides, just a boozed up uncle to help me drag him out. Shot in Montana, 2006. Didnt scout either, its too far from my home to get a scouting trip in. Got to admit, I didnt appreciate this deer for a while, cuz of the one I missed, but totally grew on me. The buck above is a nice one, especially for the first day out! goodluck in your efforts to top him this year.

Well a boozed up uncle is better than dragging that buck buy yourself. Have you hunt Montana Since??? Wow I just noticed the eye guard. That cool!!

This was my brother-in-law's DIY Northern Utah buck from last year. He was tagging along to help me look for my deer and this guy let us walk right by him and as soon as we passed he got up and tried to sneak away.

...cant figure out how to post pics...

Here is my best buck. Hunted this buck for 2 years and put alot of time into him.

Wow, there are some tremendous bucks on here, many I have never seen before.

Mywifeishotter... We started hunting MT in 03, have been there every year since. We hunt region 7, my dad and uncles usually just go for meat. Like others on here, we just hunt DIY, public land, and a few block managment areas (lots of does). Had the tag last year and got this buck.

Have the tag again this year, ill post on the MT board.

I spent 8 days scouting over three weekends. I saw this buck while scouting and on opening night, but let him walk. Fortunately he was still around on the last day. I shot him as we were headed back to camp to load up and go home.

Just after I finished the diy european mount. Any guesses on what he would score?

Nevada-2008. Scouted 2 days in the summer but did not see this one until the 5th day, saw him mid-morning then played with him 2 or 3 times before getting a shot right at dark. Good thing he was getting rutty.

Here are a few of mine.

The key do DIY success is very simple in my mind.........

Time and hard work. End of story.

Sure, shooting well, glassing well, good equipment, hunting smart, etc. etc. will help your chances in the field but NOTHING will make up for simply being on the mountain, staying at it through the tough times, and working harder than the next guy. Do that, and you will have more success than the next guy in the long run, no matter how many stories you read about lucky SOB's shooting 200+" monsters off their quad on opening morning. Yes, that happens (and I will take one like that anytime too, I certainly don't discriminate.), but only once....maybe. If you want to have success over and over, spend as much time as you possibly can and work your tail off when you are out there.

You can create your own luck.

My two best DIY public land hunts are in Huntin fool this month. I took a 344 elk on a solo elk hunt and a 174 deer with my good frined. Both hunts were public land DIY. I agree with Utahheadgear, time in the woods is the best way to get it done DIY.

northern utah buck. 16 and all by my self. my cousin left me on the mountain and went home. luckily after killling this guy i got service and called my dad

After 3 days of scouting before the season opener we spotted this buck the night before the opening day. He hit the dirt in the first 2 mins. of shooting light on the opening day even though I had promised myself, dad, and friend that I was not going to shoot anything on opening day. I just couldn't pass him up. The trigger made me do it!!

Here are 3 of mine in the last 5 years on hunting.
This one is 2005 31.5 inch 5x5 on a limited entry tag utah, scouted and seen this buck a couple of times but chose to use him as a back up buck if I couldn't find better, never did find one better.

This is a General Season Rifle tag utah, chased this buck in 2006 during muzzleloader, he was a 4x4 then, and went back same area in 2008 to hunt with some buddies and found him again. I have his sheds from 2006 when he was a 4x4. Never had the genetics to be a huge buck, but I like the narley bases.

I shot this buck this year in 2010 general season utah, my first archery anything, I was hunting elk and on this morning the elk weren't out and decided I would chance trying to stalk this buck and if I got close enough I would shoot it, and I obviously got lucky.

Took this buck 2nd rifle season 2009. It was an awesome hunt, because me, my sister, and my dad all took bucks within 15 minutes of each other, in the last hours of the last day of the season. Spotted 4 bucks and a doe bedded down a couple miles away, and stalked to within 200 yards undetected. I let my sister shoot first and she killed one, and i killed this one shortly after. after going down to check them out, one of the other bucks that had run off stopped o few hundred yards away, so using the antlers of my deer as a rest, my dad shot his buck. Stayed out till like 3am packin them out but it was worth it. It was an awesome hunt and very memorable.

Thanks man glad you like it! He is alright.:)

I took this buck in '97 in Southern Utah. I had hunted the first four days with a friend and hadn't seen a thing, then I had one morning left to hunt before my work and school schedules took over but had no one to hunt with. So I rode up the mountain to an area I had never been before, mainly scouting the area and getting to know it - hoping to find a place for the future. First place I came to that wasn't private land, I looked up and there he was - the very first deer I had seen all season. I was kind of shocked too - was thinking, "Hey - there's a deer..." then I realized he was a good buck and had to change gears in my head and say to myself - "Oh - and he's a buck! And a good one!" Didn't take me long after that though to convince myself. So I made the shot and hauled him down the hill, over a fence, and down to the truck completely and totally by myself. Luckily I was able to back my truck up to a little side hill and was able to dump him right in without having to lift him up - he was a big bodied son-of-a-gun! Anyway - not the hugest deer of all, but the biggest one saw that year for sure and the biggest one I have ever shot at.
Complete DIY.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-16-10 AT 02:47PM (MST)[p] All the bucks I've ever taken have been DIY and hunted on public land. I've never hired a guide or paid a tresspass fee. These two are my biggest, both from Colorado.

It helps if you hunt where they grow on trees ! I had to leave him overnight and he cooled out great like this. He scored right at 200 gross.

Here is my biggest buck....weight wise. I killed this buck in the Madison Range in Montana in 1976. I had spotted him the day before in a avalanche chute high up on a mountain and was able to take him the next morning by coming in from another direction. He was several miles back in and I cut him into five pieces and packed him out on two horses. After weighing all the pieces, we came up with 306 lbs. That is me with the "quarters" hanging on the meat pole. I weighed about 250 then. He scored 170 and was barely wider than his 26 inch ears. My first big buck.
