UT EXTENDED DEER

I'm intrigued by this idea of hunting deer during the rut. Although I fully anticipate taking a deer during the general rifle hunt in Southern Utah next week I have to admit it would be cool to fling arrows during Novemer along the front at some deer during the rut.

So here are my thoughts/questions. I have heard that the extended archery hunt requires a tireless effort of lots of hiking which is fine. So when do deer rut? Who has done the extended before and how has it gone? Do you run into wildlife activists being that close to the cities?

This sounds like a cool hunt. Post some pics of past successes!

Yeah I am also intrigued by this idea. I hear it is very hard to find deer but there are some monsters up there. I am going to start giving it a try to learn the area as this will be my first year. In fact I am headed out right now...as soon as my brother gets here to pick me up. He has hunted it a bit before and he tells me you have to hike way back up in there to get away from all the non hunters that are out hiking and whatnot. But anyways, last year on his way out he saw two guys by their truck with two monster bucks they had shot during the rut.

Hey good luck SticknString. Where abouts do most people head out to, not your honey holes, but like up Millcreek, Emigration, Big Cottonwood, Little Cottonwoo? All of them, any of them. Rut hunting has got to be bad ass. I'm surprised more people dont pick up their bows to head out- if they can that is.

Not many people can hack it... I've tried, put in the effort but yet to close the deal on one. Maybe I just suck? Who knows...

I wouldn't worry about the wildlife activists. I have bumped into a lot of people on the trails. Most are friendly. I had one try to confront me once and a couple of dirty looks from the Suburu crowd, but they all seemed harmless to me. The good thing is that I have never seen them off the major trails. In November there are not many people on the trails. In August I have seen some total babes jogging the trails in bikini tops. One more perk of the front!

the extended is hands down the funist time of the year. there are bucks everywhere. you have to hike high to find the monsters. and no matter how early and how high you go. there is always someone in front of you. all the canyons are good. just get a spotting scope and a truck and a bow. and you are in heaven. the whole month of Nov. is awesome pretty much. I took a 24" 4 point with real nice fronts he scored 157. there where 3 smaller bucks taken in the same week and 3 more much bigger than mine all taken on the same hill all with in the same week. you could say it was a slaughter up there. and there was no snow.

yeah I just got home from my first outing on the wasatch front. my brother has hunted it before and knows the area and I went with him. results were much better than I expected. we did have one guy up in head of us but he was just hunting grouse. then another kid walked by with a pack on but he wasn't hunting. saw 11 deer and 6 of them were bucks. 2 of them were 20-22 inch 4 points, another was about an 18 inch 3 point and 3 little 3 points like 14-15 inches. I was amazed to see that even the little guys were 3 points. my brother missed a close semi hurried shot at a 4 pt from about 35 yards. he shot the wrong ping and he is very upset with himself. he never misses shots like that. but overall a good experience...I am definitely going to spend alot of time up there and hopefully kill a decent buck.

Sounds like a helluva time for sure. Lots of work yes, but man it would be cool to see some of those giants that only come out during the rut. Too bad about your bro Sticknastring3, but sounds like you guys got into some good ones. Good luck!
