Deer on the Boulder...

What happened to them all. Last few years we have seen lots of deer this year hardly any. Went out scouting yesterday and did not see a single deer anyone else notice this? or is it just me.

any suggestions would be great.

I hunted the south end of the Boulder unit and can say the same. In ten days of hunting (bow and Muzz combined) I saw a few small bucks and one four point but he was not a monster by any means. Ive seen 0 fawns from this year and very few yearling deer and just a few doe's. Without question they are gone. Me and my buddy hunted hard and that was all we got into some of those days we didnt see a deer and very few tracks in what would be great mule deer habitat (tons of water, tons of cliffrose, and other small forbes, acorns as well, no roads, good hiding cover) we hiked our tails off and glassed til our eyes were about to fall out of our heads. Another thing I noticed sign of other animals usually in the area was gone very few turkey's where there used to be alot, no rabbits, a few coyotes and one lion track. Our theory was the massive snow the area recieved last winter anihlated most wildlife there. The elk seemed to fair the best. The deer are few and far in between. I talked with other hunters and locals and they said they have seen very few deer this year and hardly any fawns. One farmer in Cannonville said he usually see's where 20+ deer bed in his alfalfa field regulary every year and said this summer he has seen only two beds. I also dont buy the good water this year scattered them B.S. its way beyond that because its not just deer. Good luck on your hunt.

Will be hunting the beaver unit on the general next week.
Friends who live there say the same thing about there.
they hunted the muzzle and saw very few deer. They are discouraged about it.
I'm going regardless of conditions, but man, I hope to see something.

My family and I have hunted that country for the past 15 years and this year by far has been the worst. We didn't see much of anything and like has been said there were no fawns. It's looking pretty bleak down that way for the next few years.

Lowcountry I totally agree with your theory about the horrible winter last year. I archery hunted the south east part of the state and noticed exactly the same thing. The worst part is the dwr reported the area was above objective. Bull crap it is!

I spent 20+ days on boulder during archery and I would say boulder would be one of the last places I would go for deer this year.

NVdrhntr,

An interesting fact is the UDWR news page states that buck numbers are up on the Beaver and Pahvant unit this year. I do not agree with this statement. I hunt the Pahvant unit every year and have done so for the past 25 years. The buck numbers are down this year from last. Another concern I have is the fawn numbers. I have seen very few fawns this year. This spring while turkey hunting my family found way too many deer carcasses. Most of these carasses were torn apart like coyote kills.

I have to agree... Been hunting Boulder exclusively for past 5 years (archery)... This was by far the worst year yet... Only saw 2 4-points, and I shot one of the 2 3-points we saw... Deer numbers in general were less than half of what we normally see. There were not any more hunters than we usually encounter either. We put miles on our boots, and tires and I came out with the only deer...

I have mostly heard that there have been tough winters lately, and I wish we could get better information. Deer numbers were definitely DOWN...

Same as everyone else, worse year I've seen in 20.

Escalante had snow on the ground for the better part of the winter which is unusual.

I spent a good amount of time on the Boulder and the SE section of Fishlake. The deer herd is way down. Even rabbits are scarce. Antelope are almost non-existant and the elk herd appears to be somewhat off. I don't see the big Fish Lake elk herd in the SE areas.

They have a huge Lion problem down there on the boulder. Me and My cousin where up on there in late dec and early Jan. and saw lion track after lion track. When a local can get in trouble for snaring some 30 plus lions on the boulder and dutton and that does not even put a dent in them and I have even heard that there may have been as many as 60 lions snared we have a problem. Lets hope that we have a good wet year with out the big huge Snow that will do damage to the heards even more.

I know one guy who went with his brother spike elk hunting. He spent a couple of days around Antimony and Circleville. They didn't see much, but he's kind of a loser. Didn't really surprise me. I'm sure anyone else would have done just fine.

I'm lovin it hearing all these bad reports from the Boulder. Maybe you guys are not looking it the right places

Smelly I know what you mean I have this buddy that lives in Richfield he thinks he's this great hunter but in reality he just a wannbe mule deer hunting hack!
