HI ,
I just thought i would let you no just how smart a big old mule deer is .To day on my hunt i was glassing a big cayon and about 800+ yards acrossed the cayon i spoted a 30+" buck that would go
around 200+ after about about 12/12:30 he beded and the stock was on as i got up the plan this stock i saw two hunter's headed right to him so i just sat back and watched this unfold.
these hunter's got at 100 yard's from this buck on the same rige they had no idea that he was there . This buck got up moved
about 100 yards from them and they walk right by him . Then this buck sat back and they passed right buy him after they got what i call about 200 yards in front of him he moved right back up the rige and beded right back in the same spot were he was at first .so the stock was back on as i moved to a spot were i thought i would get a shot the buck was gone so i thought i would move up the rige and try to find what way he went after about 20 min.or so i moved down the rige as i get to the point were the other hunter were the lite went on this buck is going to go right back to his bed . i moved back up the rige and got were i could see his bed low and behold here he come's right back to his bed and did not even no i was there. as i picked my rifle up to take a shot he looked right at me so as still as i could be just sat there he would not take his eye's off me just then i heard something 2 hunters about 50 yard's right behind me as they talk the buck jumped and was gone never to return
after to day i have a real problem with just how smart a whitetail is compared to a big old mule deer. One day left and i will return in the morning to try to pick him up wish me luck and i hope there is no hunters playing in the wood's tomorrow. LOL!!!!!!

Good story even if the sentence structure made it a tough read. Now the really smart ones are already bedded by the time it gets light out and don't even get up to stretch until it is dark. I have witnessed this on top-end bucks here in Colorado even long after hunting season was over. Biggest typical I have ever seen did just that in february even......watched him for 7 hours and the only movement he made during that time was to move his head a few degrees side-to-side smelling the thermals and once for about 30 seconds looked back over his backside. He was still laying there as it got too dark to see.
Truly big muleys can be as smart as any other critter alive.

had almost the same situation happen this past wednesday morning. three of us decided to work a big bowl we see a lot of good bucks in. one up each side, and the middle. at first light a spotted a 180ish buck on the opposite side....figures. i radio my buddy on that side to no avail. i never did see him either. after watching the buck feed for about an hour, he beds up. i watch for another 45 minutes and figure hes down for the day. just as i get my pack on i decide to take one last look before making the devil hike to get to the other side, and he is standing and staring up the bowl very hard. i figure it was the spike and three cows i saw earlier and wait to see what hes going to do. he turns and trots about 150 yards up into the timber. when i look back, my buddy that went up the middle popped into view. he walked RIGHT throught the brush pocket this buck was bedded in. i grab the radio and try to make some sort of whisper contact. no luck. his radio is off. when we get back to camp, i let him know what happened. he never saw or heard the buck. he was sick about it. i let one day go by and make one final attempt at him. i had to go through the timber to get to where he was last seen, and wouldnt you know who i jump out of his bed. all hell broke loose and i got off a quick off hand shot about 200 yards away. lets just say he is going to be an even bigger buck next year!! this bowl is absolutely amazing. we see big bucks in it every year. buddy killed a toad out of it opening morning. its a hard sob to hunt though. lots of timber, brush pockets and nooks and crannies . guess thats why theyre in there year after year.

There is a great collection of old time hunting stories in a book entitled Old West Hunts. There is a quote attributed to a Navajo hunter who consistently killed huge bucks with a weathered 30-30 Winchester and hauled them out of the mountains in a horse drawn wagon.

When asked how he did it he replied."You must kill the chief buck while he sleeps and he no sleep to good."

Probably a story but no truer words were ever written about hunting "chief bucks".

Easy there deepforks, the irony of the way this post was written vs the other thread d13er pasted was just too funny to pass up. Sorry if you can't smile. And Lost, interesting observation on the buck. I hope you got him today. I also hope you can smile at the irony I saw. Now take a breath, slow down a bit and tell us about it.

Toughen up kids.

It's legal to guide someone to a big game animal using a radio in your state? I always thought that was illegal.

Welcome lost_in_the_woods, Lots of these guys love to arm chair others hunting stories, I in fact love to hear them. Some of these geniuses will insult you one minute and the next they want your free hunting tags. LMAO thanks for the story, I loved it !!!!

Wow! First off I didn't say one negative thing about Lost_in_the_woods story. In fact I have said I thought it was interesting and hoped that he got to kill the buck. I admit I have a warped sense of humor and since there was a post on the general forum about the use of the words "stalk" and "stock" incorrectly, I was amused by the fact that Lost followed form and used "stock" instead of "stalk".

Secondly, I honestly didn't even notice he is a new poster here, but the fact that he did that in practically his first rattle out of the box is even funnier. He'll fit right in. Welcome to the twilight zone Lost.

As I said I did not criticize his story or arm chair his thread away. I could point out that he is either a very generous person wanting to give away 5 New Mexico deer tags or he is breaking one of the number one rules here by trying to sell something without paying for advertizing. But I didn't. I could have picked his story apart and questioned him saying the buck was a 30+, 200+ incher, but I didn't. It was a friendly little jab. I'm pretty sure Lost_in_the_Woods can handle it and if he can't or if you all can't, well either move on or toughen up buttercup. You're in the wrong venue for mamby-pamby sensitivity.

As far as an apology. Really? Character? Really? You guys crack me up. It's the internet for hellsake!

It's really no big "dill".

Professor Arrogant out.

Ha ha. Maybe instead of applying for a job there some people ought to apply to go to school there. :) There may be a reason why it's called www.morongonation.org. (hint: break it up into three words, the middle one being "go")

REDDOG, it's WITH not IS. :)
