Can't wait for Saturday, tons of scouting lots of 150" class deer. 11 bucks in two hours this past weekend, one giant 3x3 about 160", great mass. Saw one a long ways away that should be 180"+. My son and father have buck tags, will be hard keeping my son's finger off the trigger.

Let him shoot what he wants!

good advice justr_86, that kids out there to have a good time and it won't matter if he shoots a forky or a hog, he's gonna have a blast!

Good luck on the hunt and be safe out there.

First let me start by explaining my son, he is 17 and way more interested in chasing girls than Mule Deer. He has shot 3 Deer all through the heart, all small bucks opening day and then is pissed at himself for shooting a small buck. He missed a nice 5x5 opening morning, after the shooting started the deer went wild and could not get anything to stop except small bucks. Sunday moring we saw 4 bucks but the wind was bad and had to get around them to get close enough to shoot. When we got into position the bucks were gone and we saw a coyote sitting were we found them. We started glassing to find them, after about 10 minutes I pulled my binos away from my face and they were standing right in front of us and we were busted. The deer took of into the wind so we followed them for 2 miles hoping they would stop, they never did. We starting glassing a far hill where I usually find deer after the pressure starts. I found a big body feeding about two miles away so we closed the distance to get a better look. We went about 3/4 of the way to wher I thought we could get a shot but were still 1500 yards away with the wind shifting. I figured we had to get above him and down wind so we had to go all the way around the mountian(at this point we had already wlaked about 5 miles and creating distance to were we had to walk back to). We climbed Mount Mother #@$%^& and came out perfect for a 100 yard shot. Shot out the lungs, bedded 10 yards away and died is 2 minutes. We were both half dead and still had to pack it out. My son had injured his leg in a football game and couldn't carry much weight. The adrenaline kicked in and the walk out was not bad. He was very happy he had missed Saturday and didn't shoot the small one's. Everything happens for a reason!

Allright, round two is coming up. I will be bringing my 71 year old father out this weekend. Don't be fooled my father can out walk most 35 year olds. The big part I left out of my previous posts is that Friday the day before opening day I spotted a giant! I was hoping he would be in the general area opening morning but as it usually works out he was gone. I have seen several giant deer scouting in the past but when season opens they are always gone. I have a picture of a 215 inch typical that I will attempt to scan and post that we saw two years ago, hunted my a$$ off and never found him. Sometimes I think I have a pretty good idea the movements of the deer where I hunt and sometimes I feel like I know nothing.

Questions:

You spot a giant buck feeding with several other good bucks half hour before it gets dark, how far will he move to bed, will he feed until sunrise(full Moon), will he stay with the group, does he go to the closest water. I think I know a lot of the answers BUT I have never been able to find the real giants after I spot them even a day later.

That's a great deer! Congrats to your son. I bet his smile was as wide as the spread on those antlers. Congrats again!

Brought my dad out Saturday shot his first buck ever, he has been with me on many of my hunts but never wanted to shoot. This year he decided he wanted to shoot, he is 71 years old, the first trigger pull on a big game animal and he shoots a 190 inch deer. I had more fun and was more excited than any hunt I have ever been on. After it was all said and done he said he was going back to take pictures instead of hunting.

We have three more tags for the last combined season in colorado, can we keep our luck going? The deer my dad shot is a little deceptive, he has 18" g2's, 24" main beams, only 21 inside and 10 inches of extras, mass is a little weak but not bad for his first deer.
