Jacob packing out a couple of successful hunters.

We had 100% shooting opportunities for our clients this year and 87% of clients took home a buck. We still have plenty of deer in region H if you know where to look. We had good numbers of 4x4 deer remaining after season closed and barring a hard winter we should have a great season next year. We are booking hunts for 2011 right now. If you have one preference point or apply for the special deer tag you can get a mule deer tag to hunt next year.

This deer was just short of 30 inches.

Another nice deer. We did not get a tape on this one but guess between 180-190

We only had one deer hunter go home without filling his tag and he had several opportunities to turn down. Our antelope, black bear, archery elk, and rifle elk hunters all had 100% filled tags. We had some unfortunate excitement with a grizzly bear charge that ended up with a dead grizz at our feet. This was an exceptionally bad year for run ins with bears. We had bears in camp, in our headquarters building and the grizz attack during archery season. This year was long winter followed by a short summer with no berry crop and a pine beetle blight causing failure of the White Bark Pine crop which is a staple in the diet of the bears in our area.

Dead grizz. The investigator examining this bear is a big man, dwarfed by the size of this bear's head.

Autopsy was done. First shot into the hump of the charging bear slowed him down. The 450 marlin makes a big hole on entry when discharged at 20 ft. from the impact point. Two additional shots were required to finish the bear, mere feet from the guide and hunter. There were no exit wounds.

There are several grizzly bears in the northern Wyoming range right now. Time will tell if this is an anomoly or if they are truly expanding their range. Excercise extreme caution when hunting in the area especially if you are bowhunting by yourself and carry some readily accessible method of bear defense. This bear offered no warning and charged from 20 yards, with no provocation. Investigators estimate this to be a 6-7 year old boar, around 600 pounds in good condition. There have been numerous cattle kills by bears in this area this year.

So what happened with the law. I always thought that you better have bit marks on your body before you kill a grizzly? With that said I am glad nobody got hurt. There are rummors around cache valley that some body got pictures of a grizzly on a trail camera in the franklin basin area.

You guys got some great Bucks.

MCJ,

I am assuming you bought Trophy Mountain Outfitters? I see you have the same kill photos on your websites. Nice call name. Looks like we hunt the same area. Was the grizz kill around Prospect?

We bought this camp from Trophy Mountain Outfitters. Dustin still runs hunts from his OK corral operation north of us and is still Trophy Mountain Outfitters. Dustin provided us with pictures from this camp to use as part of our sale agreement. We will be adding our own kill photos from this year as soon as I can get all of them rounded up from our guides.

Yes, Grizz was killed on the north side of Prospect.

Nice pictures. I was curious if you operated in unit 141 for mule deer? I've been wondering if it was worth the weather gamble to get a wall hanger buck.

I'm torn between applying for the unit specific or region tag with my points.

Can you give us your thoughts?

We do not operate in 141 and I do not have any first hand knowlege of hunting in that unit. This year was a dry year with no snowfall during our deer season. Most years there will be some snow by the last week of season (Oct. 7th or 10th) We can have snow any time but every day you wait seems to increase the chance you will get into some bad weather.
