ENTERPRISE LIMITED ENTRY

Any truth to word going around that the Utah DWR is thinking about making the Enterprise, Gunlock, Pacoon Flats, Utah hill areas into a limited entry unit for deer? Has much the same characteristics as Pauns imo.

There's always pros and cons with turning a new area into a limited entry area. Part of this area used to be a limited entry unit quite a few years ago. I kind of like the idea. I think the area would produce some very large animals and maybe decrease the drawing odds on some of the other LE deer units. I have not heard anything about this being a possibility though. It would be a fun hunt!

I haven't heard anything about it, but if there is going to be 30 different units, it's a possibility. I would love that! If bucks were allowed to get any age on them, it'd put the Pauns to shame, IMO.

I would love to see this happen! And I agree with UTmonsterslayer on this one!

YOU AINT GOING TO KILL A BIG BUCK UNLESS THERE IS A BIG BUCK WHERE YOUR HUNTING!!!

I don't see that happening for a lot of different reasons. If it was, then so would every other unit in the state. Micromanaging in utah will probably be here next fall.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-25-10 AT 04:39PM (MST)[p]why would the DWR make it limited entry? Makes no sense. In the past, Utah has only made areas limited entry when deer numbers get low. This is not the case with the pinevalley/enterprise area. And why would you want it to go limited entry and only get to hunt it once every 10 yrs?

With a some hard work, you can kill a nice buck there now and get to hunt it every year. WTF?

The Pine Valley is close to what the division wants accross the rest of Utah. Limited entry. That's funny.

I do believe that it will one of the 29 units that the DWR is proposing for next year. And alot of people will want to hunt there, so down the road, it might get harder to draw than other units.

I Would 100% love to see this. That place get brutalized every season that exists and it still produces 2-3 year old bucks every so often. imagine if those bucks were allowed to get 4-5 and heaven forbid the old age of 6-7 and have them reach their potential. That would really suck to have another great limited entry thats largely public land.one more unit to sift out more point holders. wish it would happen.

If they leave it like it is they need to put a few stop lights out there and some handicap parking. LOL That place is a zoo.

It already grows some real monsters. and could potentialy be one of if not the best unit in utah. If they lowered the number of tags on the unit. They should throw pinevalley in as part of the unit as well. However the state would probably loose way to much money from tag revenue to consider it.

Enterprise would be be an awesome limited entry unit. It has several good things going for it. The place see's virtually no winter kill due to the very low elevation and mild climate of the winter range. The genetics are very good, and currently deer populations are healthy. And lastly, there are very very few elk in the area. If they would start to micro manage we might see what some of these bucks look like when they are 5-7 years old.I saw a 4X5 taken off the unit this year that was a 1 1/2 old buck. I would have loved to have seen that deer in another 5 years. I'm not sure another limited entry umit is the answer, but I would be in favor of multiple units with the goal of micro management similar to NV and CO.

I can't really speak for the DWR but here are my thoughts:

Although it's an interesting idea I don't see it ever happening again (the entire unit was closed many many years ago due to very low population numbers), nor do I think it's necessary. Part of the reason being the local population; hunting is big part of the culture being that it's a very rural town. There is a lot of tradition there and a lot of that involves taking the youngsters out. . . when you're 14 buck fever's going to hit you ever bit as rough on a 14 inch forky as it will on a 200" buck. That's what hunting is about fellas. Also, try telling the hay/corn/pumpkin ranchers that feed the deer all summer that they will only be able to hunt once every ten years. . . . .
Lastly, if one is willing to leave the ox valley / north hills race track and do some walking. . . . . there are PLENTY of very nice mature bucks to be had, anyone that has ever tried it can attest to that.;)

I have made several trips down there this year and unfortunately I think the population numbers are down. . . last winter was uncharacteristically severe and I think the winter kill was greater than usual. Maybe the deer stayed higher for the majority of the season but where hundreds of deer can be seen in the hay fields around town there were virtually none this year. But that's wildlife management; highs and lows in the hopes of a constant.

Bottom line is all of you that continue killing 1 1/2 year old bucks [ FORKEYS ] and then complaining are wasting our time and your resources. Let them walk and they will age and you will start to see more big bucks. I let 30 + bucks walk this season including a 24 inch 3x4 with eye guards did the next guy pass him i dont know i hope. And not all 14 year olds get buck fever over a dink forky and if they do then dads gone wrong somewhere.

By your name Longshooter, any buck that was within 1000 Yards or so that you saw and didn't shoot at "walked". Right?

I use to hunt the ox valley area and there are a few good bucks but, in that area theres so many roads to take you cant hike for over 30 min without getting closer to another road. If there was ever a place that needed to have a little regulation this is it. Its a wonder nobodys taken a stray bullet in that place. As for the locals i personally know they try stay as far away from that place as possible.

Just like some one said earlier in this post the 29 unit proposal will turn it into a limited entry unit any way. The only difference would be if they raised the price to the premium tag price witch I do not see happening for a few years they will just limit the tags down lower than what comparable units will have alloted.

Terrible idea, if we make it a limited entry unit the deer will just migrate into 24 in Nevada where they hunt them later and they will kill them. Just what we need another Paunsaguant where Utah restricts the tags and grows big bucks so they can migrate to Arizona to be killed in late November.
If you want to make new units it need to be on the Beaver, Pahvant so we are not losing deer to other states and they can replenish some of the surrounding areas.
