The season opened on the 15th but we couldn't get away untill the 20th. The weather report was showing lots of rain comming so we worked hard the first day before the weather changed. Dustin passed on a nice 4x4 first thing that morning, he wanted to shoot his best buck. We got him in on a wider 4pt that afternoon but when we moved in and he stood up you could only see his head and rack. After a long wait the buck broke out and he missed a tough running shot before it got over the top. That was it for day 1. Day 2 the rain came but it was on and off, so we made the 10 mile ride on the atv's in the dark and rain to get to a new spot. We moved up the middle ridge one of us on each side so we could cover more area. We had only made it 1/3 of the way when I spot a nice buck thats watching Dustin. So I took off my pack and crawled up to a rock and took the shot. I had hoped to get him the shot but it had him pegged. The buck has some great mass and is a 9x5. Dustin was just as stoked as I was. The rest of the day we saw a couple small bucks but that was it. Day 3 started at 2am. with rain and rain and more rain. It rained hard all day. Creek beds that were dry the day before were now full. We stayed in the camper and listened to nfl games all day. At about six, the rain let up some so we decided to get in the truck and go for a drive the last hour of light. We went about a mile up the road pulled into a pass and started to glass, which is hard through the wipers. After a couple minutes Dustin says there's a deer up that little creek. Even with the spotting scope we couldn't tell how good he was. He went into some tall sage and laid down, so we rain geared up and headed up the next one. When we were at the same highth on the hill we cut over the ridge and moved in. At 100 yards I spotted him still in his bed but on full alert. Dustin got down on his shooting sticks but in the high winds he couldn't keep his gun still. So I laid down on the ground and he used my big butt as a rest! The only bad thing about this is I couldn't watch the shot. At the sound of the shot I knew he hit. The buck jumped from his bed made three bounds and fell over. Now this is the first time a buck has got bigger when you got up to him. He is a 4x6 29 1/2''. It was a hunt that I will remember all my life. I love you son. Great job.

Yikes. As bad as the overall numbers are in Idaho, it still seems to be kickin' out some bruisers this year! Very nice bucks!!!
