My 30 incher

The rifle hunt this year was better than its been in a long time! The weather conditions were great here in the NE region, you could be quiet walking through the trees giving me the upper hand. Not to mention keeping the bulk of the people riding roads and whining cause its storming. Opening day I saw over 60 head letting 7 little bucks and 1 20 inch 3 (still small but nice for the area). My dad and I missed a true monster saturday night. We were stalking up on 2 nice bucks when we happened across him. I was walking behind my dad and looked over in a small clearing and I saw what at first glance I thought was an elk, I put my scope up to see if he had busted us or if we could move around him and keep after the other bucks. Whoa dad big buck big buck I whispered. I knelt down put the crosshairs on his shoulder and touched it off, sounded great and he jumped and went just inside the trees and looked back at us. I shot 3 more times and my dad once. All of the shots I felt great about... Me shooting a 300 mag if I hit him he should have went right down is all I could think... My dad followed his tracks over and we couldn't find any blood and we could see where all the shots hit the hill behind him in the 2 inches of snow. I swear the bullets had to have been going through him. We chased him the next morning and I was very close to him 3 different times and could have killed him but wasn't sure it was him because of how thick it was, then when I was sure there was no shot. My uncle missed the 2 bucks we were originally stalking. Monday we had my 3 year old and 18 month old boys so we were stuck close to the truck. My 3 year old had enough of being in the truck so we went for a short walk. 3 does and a 2 point came in front of us at about 120 yds. With my boy saying shoot him dad. I really want you to shoot him dad! I stood up and was going to shoot right above his head to scare him. plug your ears buddy. Boom! He did a backflip..... I hit a little low..... He is about 30 inches gross score lol...
Tuesday my brother dad uncle and cousin were going back in after the buck. After dropping them off to push the trees I stopped to glass them and seen the buck I missed saturday, he is all of 28 wide mainframe with atleast 2 cheaters on his left side making him a 4x6 and with his cheaters putting him over 30. He gave my dad the same runaround as me but he got closer to getting a shot but this buck is a freaking snake! My dad also ran into a 160 class buck, I don't know who scared who more lol. Both jumped 10 feet in the air and my dad couldn't get a shot off. My cousin killed the big 2 point in there. They are hunting him again today and hopefully they get 1 of the 2 big bucks running in there!

My wife is teaching science so we took the deer in for her to clean in class and show the kids the digestive and respiratory systems. There was 3 kids in her class that were non hunters that really want to go now. I'm in the process of working with them and their parents to take them hunting and see if I can get them hunting! I didn't know so much would come from a 2 point. My son couldn't be more proud of his dad!

Your welcome! Glad your hunt was a good one. Great buck by the way.

Oh and we were back at the truck and the kids had taken off their coats before the picture.

Good job Kenny! Nice buck - love it that your wife used it to teach. Only in Utah can you gut a deer in science class! LOL!!

Nice job. I was able to get my son involved in hunting this year too and it was awesome! BTW, I think you are selling that buck short, he just might gross in the 40's.

Haha, nice 30 incher dude. I remember when I was real young, my brother begged my dad to shoot a "30 incher" that he spotted. Dang thing dropped right in it's tracks, looked just like that one! Glad you could kill it with your boys there, I can tell they are having fun.

and THAT. . . ladies and gentleman is what hunting is about.

Well done sir.

This is my first year of dedicated hunter too. Kole will have to talk grandpa or uncle rick (kawboy) into shooting a 2 point next year!

Rick was up on the hill above me and after I shot I heard him yell "A 2 point?!? Really?!?"

Wonderful picture and great hunt...except the missing part.

I have had all three of my daughters and my son (when they were very young) with me when I've shot deer. Not much in life is better..........and they all tell the whole world their daddy is the "best deer hunter in the world". (Who cares if it's true!)

Congrats to all of you!

Within the shadows, go quietly.

Good job! Way to get the kids involved. To bad about the big one but, that seems so much better congrats.

Good Job Justr, glad your kids got to be there. Its one of the best things about hunting when you have your kids there to experience it with.

A 2_Point........Really!?,
Fun times man!

I'll tell you who it was . . . it was that D@MN Sasquatch!

He just might be talking about shooting a high-powered rife "just over" a deers head with intent to scare him off. I could see how that might be an ethics thing?

Not common practice, when I shot I didn't really want to kill it. It turned out to be a great situation I thought I would share it. It put hunting back to what its really about instead of the big rack. It was the reality check I needed. I'm very happy with the way it turned out. I don't shoot at deer just to scare them, I was trying to humor my son and shoot at it and it turned out better than I ever could have imagined.

I don't know why I'm trying to justify it.

Sometimes things just turn out in the best possible situation. I still wouldn't change a thing.
