Great Buck for a Great Kid

LAST EDITED ON Oct-30-10 AT 09:21PM (MST)[p]My son, Lane, scored on a great buck yesterday.

On Wednesday morning of the Utah General Season my son and I were looking at a 2 point buck. He took aim on the buck and asked me if he should shoot it. My response to him was, ?If you shoot this buck then you won't get a 4 point, but it is your decision. You can do whatever you would like.?

This was a tough decision because he really wanted some meat to make jerky and I was leaving on a business trip later that day. This was compounded by the fact that deer numbers seemed to be way down this year and we were having a hard time finding even a little buck.

My son lowered his gun and said, ?Take me to school, I will keep hunting.? He knew that there is a 4 point buck in the area and really wanted a chance to get him. Earlier this year, during the muzzleloader season, he missed a nice 4 point buck due to some bad luck. The same thing happened last year when ?Buck Fever? struck him as he jerked badly as he pulled the trigger on a nice 30? 3x4 buck.

Friday morning I was sitting in a meeting with clients and the cell phone rang. I looked and saw that it was my oldest son. Could he be calling to tell me that Lane got a deer? I couldn't take the call right then and anxiously waited for a break. 10 minutes later I called my oldest son, ?What's up? Did Lane get a deer??

?Lane just shot a huge 4 point buck! It is awesome!?

I finally got the story and pictures later that day. My oldest son took Lane out hunting Thursday night. All they saw were does. They hurried to another area just before dark to see if there were any deer. It was nearly too dark to see and they spotted a few deer on a hillside. One of them appeared to be a nice buck but it was too dark to shoot.

Early the next morning they went back to that same area and spotted a few does. It was about time to go to school and they were getting ready to leave, when all of a sudden a buck came running in front of them. As they went around the hillside they looked up and the buck was on the hillside about 100 yards away. Lane took aim and pulled the trigger. He thought he missed as the deer started to bound away. On the third bound the buck tumbled, somersaulted and hit the dirt. His buck is bigger than any deer I have ever harvested. My son has been on cloud 9 ever since.

My son is a great kid and really deserved this buck. Good Job Lane!

Let me know what you think this buck scores.

Great buck and congrats to your son. I like the fact that he held out and decided to keep hunting for the bigger buck, that's a hard decision for a young hunter but it sure paid off big time.

Wow...!! Great buck... You know what i like about this story...?? This big ole buck thought he'd made it through the rifle season again- not counting on a youth hunter to whack him at 100 yds...!!!
