Tony Abbott, In a previous post you asked for someone to please admit "WE NEED MORE DOES not bucks if we are gonna save the deer herd."

I've been reading your posts, and I'm starting to buy into your idea that increasing the buck ratio is a red herring. Put another way, its not the real issue.

So what do we need to do to increase the deer population? Can you lay it out in simple terms?

Also, if you are aware of the proposals the MDF, SFW etc are supporting I'd be interested to know their official position.

Thanks in advance

You guys are all wrong up here in Idaho, specifically units around boise the over hunting caused the buck to doe ratio to be some where around 2 to 3 small bucks per 100 does (on a good day). So what did they do kill off the does buck to doe ratio fixed duh.

I agree IDBoneCollector. Last year I was in 39 with my Uncle and we hiked up a draw and saw a good 80 does and a spike. Buck Doe ratio here is absolutely terrible.

WOW!

Took right at 38 years to figure this on out huh?

Why the Hell have we been having Doe slaughters for years?

Bunch of BS!

Over the years I used a herd of Domestic cattle for comparison & got jumped big time:"These animals are nothing the same"

Well Hot Damn!

Their Fricken idea on getting Buck to Doe ratio's back in perspective is:

After they kill too many Bucks they slaughter the Does to get the Buck to Doe ratio's where they want them,WAFJ!

What really pisses me off is when they wait till late in the year to slaughter Does around Current Creek & Red Creek you are killing Does from all over the South Slope that have migrated in!

Ya,That's what we need!

Then I get jumped:"You're not a Biologist"
You're right,I'm not one & I'm not gonna go to school for 5+ years just to get brainwashed!

B-BOP, do you think elk numbers or cattle have any effect on deer numbers in that area? I have been in that area several times and there are alot of both. I do agree with you the doe hunts need to stop. The coyotes in that area are also thick, they no doubt are taking thier share of the deer.

SFW, Could friggin care less about the deer heard, all they care about is your money come banquet time i learned that the hard way !

It takes 7 bucks to successfully breed 100 does. So yes Bucks matter to a small extent. The point is Utah is at 15 bucks to 100 does on all but 3 of the management units. So that means in Utah BUCKS ARE NOT THE ISSUE.

Total deer numbers are the issue. We kill very few does in this state and we are very very aggressive on predators.

My idea for fixing the deer herd is going through a process that will actually work. This forum is not the place to make a change.

Maybe not the place to make a change, but if it's a good idea, you would get some supporters.

I'll readily admit that you know a lot more about the deer herds in this state than most of us here. That's why I want to see your proposal. There's a chance I'll agree with you.

You keep complaining that the deer are going downhill and that the DWR is up in the night, yet we haven't seen the solution you propose. I have a hunch you don't want to share it here because it would make a lot of elk hunters angry. You don't have to argue your points, but I'd sincerely like to see your ideas.

Any solution put in place is going to frustrate or anger some folks. That's just the way it is.

Tony I agree with most of what you have said and especially the part about the elk influencing the deer herd. I do not agree with you about Utah being aggressive on predators.

This year I hear story after story about hunters crossing lion tracks in the snow. Find the deer - find the lion tracks.

I never said Utah was aggressive enough of predators but they have been more aggressive than any other Western state. Predators are a problem but they at least are being addressed a little bit.

Not quite how I can beleive its the elk that are to blame. Colorado has three times as many elk and their deer herds are healthy....except for hard hit wintering areas in their northern end. The difference is winter range and habitat, Utah is really hurting in that area, mostly in the northern half where high numbers of elk do exist.
