Is it bad

Is it bad that before I put a stalk on a buck tonight I second guessed my decision because the deer herd is struggling so bad that maybe I should let him live? Now, I didn't get the buck, and I did try, but it kinda bugs me that it's gotten this bad that I have to think about it, and question myself.

Is it bad that you have a conscience and a sense of ethics and don't trust the biologists who say that you should be able harvest that deer?

Is it bad that you realize that you can hunt and don't necesarily have kill to feel responsible and fulfilled?

Hmmm - sounds to me like you are better off than 90% of the hunters in the field.

I know the feeling. We were looking over a ton of deer last weekend, with numerous spikes, forkies, and young three and four points. When we finally saw a big mature buck we thought, what if we did kill this buck. We'd be taking out the only big breeder buck in the area. Luckily for the buck we are bow hunting and it didn't work out, so he gets a chance to breed some more does before this weekend, when we'll try again.

I understand what you are thinking but we both proved what people will do given the opportunity. We both had thoughts that the deer herd is struggling and still opted to go after the buck because the opportunity was there. Everyone else would do the same. I would hope that big game managers would make a change to their management plan before the majority of hunters were having these kinda thoughts.

i have always felt that if the buck presented himself that i should shoot it, no matter how big. its been my luck to ure bucks present themselves, but this last hunting season(archery) i have passed on several spikes and forkies. passing on these bucks is just second nature for most i bet, but i have to make that extra effort to not shoot and to let him go and actually hunt to find a bigger buck. i have probably spent over 3 weeks in the field all together hunting deer this year and if i would have shot the first little guy that crossed my path, i would have missed out on 20 days worth of hunting and adventure.

Is it bad that you cheat at name that tune too?? jk man.

I went out to a different spot tonight and saw 3 two points and a spike. Didn't see anything big tonight. Going to try again in the morning. As far as me cheating on name that tune, I can neither confirm nor deny. I just know music, that's it.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-18-10 AT 06:22PM (MST)[p]Lol! I can neither confirm or deny you saw a nice buck either.

But we'll say you did ;)

10 years ago I decided since the deer numbers in Oregon suck so bad I wouldn't shoot another deer in this state unless I thought he was worth mounting. I haven't shot a buck in Oregon for 10 years.

The true purpose of hunting is to harvest the excess and manage the herd. if you feel the herd isn't in need of thinning then your only being a good sportsman to question taking an animal. nothing wrong with that.
