What would be the pro's and con's of doing the following?:

Turn turn area X into an LE area. Area X has a good number of deer, but has fallen below the desired over-all herd potential and buck-to-doe ratio.

In this LE area, Give out two types of tags. 3 point or smaller tags, and 4 point or better tags.

PRO: you could issue more 4 point or better tags and less smaller deer tags, but still issue the same amount of tags.

CON: people shooting before they can clearly identify the size of the animal and leaving "bad-harvested" bucks that weren't big enough or that weren't inside the specified peramators.

Do you think that this would help an area? it would still give those that wanted a chance to hunt a chance, with out making it a trophy area.

I dont even know what i did to the guy, but i just got a PM from him that said for me to go f*ck myself and that i was a stupid piece of sh*t. i whish he would use language like that in an open forum and not behind closed doors.

I agree with aaron. You cant tell me or anybody else what to shoot! Antler restrictions dont work! Never have never will!

Definetley a boxing match in order. I voiced my opinion in a thread the other day and it wasn't even directed towards him and he jumped all over me like a fat kid on a cupcake! he hurt my feel bads. HAHAHA

I can't use language like that on the open forum children and woman enjoy this website not just guy's. I won't make that mistake twice. As for my pm well that's the only way I could express myself, without it being on a public forum. Antler restriction's are lame just like you and your sweet set up to practice at moving target's. Oh and they don't work.

Travis I thought we were going to go hunting at your place this year. I called you and didn't hear back. My brother was really disapointed.

Back to the original question.....

No. Point restrictions like 3 or 4 point have been tried before in places, but have not worked well...Lots of bucks get shot that don't meet the restrictions and get left to rot, sometimes the guy shoots another...It's a mess. The UT management hunts don't have enough tags to really notice...but try that on a general hunt and it will not work.

Here are a couple of numbers on illegal kill on the antler restricion units.

DWR reports in the Salt Lake Tribune or Deseret News, can't remeber which.

Unit X had a 400% increase on illegal kills with antler restriction in place. Man that is alarming!!!

Full story, Unit X had one reported doe killed the previous year. The illegal kill while in antler restriction. 4 bucks. It's all about number spinning.

I know antler restriction has been burned in the fire long ago. However if illegal harvest is your main concern you are going off of tainted numbers. I know for a fact pre antler restriction I found more does that had been shot and left then I ever found two point bucks. Listen to what you are saying. It is basically that we as hunters and sportsmen and women are to stupid to make sure of our targets. If that is really the case in such mass occurences it ought the scare the heck out of all of us out there in the field.

Make your biological arguements all you want. There is support for both sides, but for heaven sake don't throw all hunters under the bus be using the illegal harvest angle! We have figured it out on the elk good enough for the DWR to feel comfortable?

There are not enough deer in Utah...FOR REAL.
