This is a simple question.

With all things being equal, meaning quality, season length, opportunity, hunt in the rut if desired, etc

Which would you rather hunt if you had to choose, ELK or MULE DEER?

UTAH HAS TOO MANY LAND CARP!

Um... no question- Mule Deer every time... Unless I kill progressively larger deer each year for like 10 years- then I may go with elk...

LAST EDITED ON Nov-29-10 AT 11:33AM (MST)[p]We (our family) hunt elk to eat (meat for the winter) and love hunting big bulls. Deer we hunt for trophys and jerky. Generally we kill at least one elk a year (cow or bull) . Deer if it isn't big we dont shoot. Except for the young hunters in the family. When they get a buck we jerky the hole thing. Have to hide it from the kids to make it last the year.
So yes elk !

What We gonna do?

Take a Vote?

And which ever Species loses get's Decimated?

I like both!
I think We should keep both!
I think both should be managed responsibly!
I think we should have Trophy Units for both Species!
I think we should let the PISSCUTTIN Crowd have a few Units where they can manage Both as they please, but when it's destroyed they don't have the right to stomp in & destroy LE Units!

Mule Deer whithout a doubt. Nothin in this world is as cool as a big muley buck!!!

"That's a special feeling, Lloyd"

elk cause there are no deer in utah thats the whole problem and you guys will never have any cause the state only cares about $$$$$ and you guys cant give and quit argueing and fighting among yourselfand dont give me crap about puncuation cause i dont care

Both are great, but my mind is clouded with reality, love mule deer, but its not like it used to be. Id say elk, their habitat is more intact, and they are awesome when they rut.

I love hunting big muley's but nothing gets my adrenaline going like hearing a big bull scream! I am going to go with elk.

BOTH - we should not have to choose one over the other. Look at Colorado - even in the high desert areas ( 11, 211, 3, etc) you have ample populations, resident and migration, of both. We have that same habitat, but we can't get both to coexist? hmmmmmmm.

If you force me - Elk all day long!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-29-10 AT 11:30PM (MST)[p]Mule Deer. I can't be live how many elk guys there are here, maybe somebody needs to start a spin off website?

There is no such thing as a sure thing in trophy mule deer hunting.

Muleys for sure .... Might only be cause ive never been on a rut hunt.

Little different here in Idaho. Some tags and permits you can hunt both at the same time. Because they can actually coexist when managed right.(not in any way saying Idaho does either) But mule big buck and big bull side by side one bullet.... wait til they line up and take em both one shot !!!!

Mule deer.

Big ol' stinky ruttin' bulls are awesome, but it's always going to be, that rare muley buck that makes me say "Oh chiiiit!"

LAST EDITED ON Nov-30-10 AT 02:26AM (MST)[p]Wow thats a really tough decision. I want to say both but if I had to choose I think it would be elk. I grew up hunting mule deer from when I was a wee tot. All of my family still hunts for mule deer every year but my brother has gotten me into hunting elk in the past 4 years. There is just something about hunting elk in the rut when they are bugling like mad that gets my adrenaline going like nothing else in the world.
Perhaps if I had more opportunities at trophy mule deer here in Utah, I would prefer muleys. I have just heard endless stories about the good ol' days and feel that I was born a few decades late. Although, this is my first year hunting the Wasatch front during the extended season and it has definitely gotten me more excited about hunting mule deer in Utah.

Just a side note fishon!

If we had a Late Buck hunt like We used to with these new Inlines I think you'd perty much toast what few decent/big Bucks we have left in TARDVILLE!

Its not hard to see why fishon started this, and it looks like its about even. The good old days of mule deer hunting are over, they are never coming back, even if the herds were much larger than today, the hunting couldn't even compare in quality. Get rid of elk, and thats all you would do, is get rid of elk. The reason elk are doing so much better is because their bigger, more robust, the habitat suits them better, and they can handle the drought, drought, tough winter cycles much better. The conditions the led up to the good old days of mule deer hunting will not happen again. In my opinion, if you get rid of elk herds, your going to lose lots and lots of hunting opportunity, not only bulls but cows, and in return there would be little or no gain in mule deer hunting opportunity.

I like Elk. They're bigger so that means I can shoot at them from 100+ yards or on the run and have a better chance of stickin one. Utah has more elk anyway, so if I wound one or two they won't be noticed as much.
Traditional only >>>------->

SHEEP!!! Then elk with a bow in the rut. Then deer with anything because it is hard to kill a big one
Shoot em till their dead

Elk hands down. I love eating cow elk, have shot a decent 6 point too.

Love hearing the scream of bulls in the rut.

Sorry but mule deer taste like you doused a peice of crap in sage brush, roasted it over a rubber tire fire, then pissed on it to boot!!

Elk on the other hand, DELICIOUS!!
