Big Buck & Bull Contest.

Thanks Fat Banty!

Nice Bucks & You know if TARDS in Utah had a contest like that they'd easily make them small Buck winners look big!:D

What happened to the First Place winner for elk was completely shady. When I saw what was happening, I left cause I was disgusted and felt bad for the guy. I bet he can't wait to enter next year to see what kind of BS gets pulled. He is at least owed an apology!

Yeah thirtythirty I hear ya. I was there with my friend that had the biggest bull and it was screwed up what they did to him. He was supposed to win all three things but they decided to change the rules after he showed up. And the scores weren't even close he beat second and third by 6 points. The worst part about is the lady that won the rifle is putting on the contest. I guess she really wanted that rifle to change the rules.

Yea, it's a good contest things got pretty screwed up this year with bull contest. But look at the rifle deer it was won by a land owner tag holder and the second and third place bucks were both killed with muzzle loaders in September. How fair is that I mean one shot with open sights against a magazine full and a scope... The one that really ticks me is the youth that whacked a freaking toad with his bow and didn't even get mentioned... Anyway, I'm sure I will buy a ticket again next year and hopefully they will let the muzzle loader bucks have their own category again...

I just got off the phone with Quentin and he told me Jack called him and apologized for what when on that night. Quentin will be getting the prizes that he won that night.

Well guys, thanks for the good whippin' but maybe if you knew more about how this contest is put together you might understand things better. This was our first year to have the big bull part of the contest and we are in our infant stages of it. We go out and raise all of the money that we can and get all of the prizes that we can through donations and from peoples good will, and the rest we buy. Everything in the auction part of the contest is money earned for the next years contest. We make very little money on this event after you consider all of the costs involved and most if not all money is earned on beer sales. For a $35.00 ticket you get a free Bar-B-Q and a chance to look at some good bucks and bulls. And if you have a good buck or bull you could win a good prize. After talking to Jack yesturday I learned that we did not have as many prizes for the bull category as we have traditionally had for the deer category. So in Jacks mind he figured that the Bull head mount is worth anywhere from $700.00 to $1,500.00 and decided that the 1st place winner should have the most valuable prize because the rifle is worth about $400.00 to $500.00. The all you can drink beer mug was something Gregg Faux wanted over anything else so because Quentin lives in Reno, Jack figured that he would never have a chance to use it and awarded it to Gregg. We never stated up front that the first place prize would be divided up due to not having enough prizes. So we took the complaints in to account and realized that you guys had a valid point and we should have given Quentin all 3 prizes. Jack has stepped up to the plate and apologized to Quentin and will award him the full amount of the first place prize. We made a mistake and are acknowledging that fact and are trying to fix that mistake. As far as insinuating that Kenda wanted the rifle out of greediness is incorrect and wrong. Kenda also felt that Quentin should have gotten the rifle and if we could not for some unseen reason get it to him was going to donate it for next years contest. So it did not go wrong out of greed or shadieness but out of pure screw up.
As far as the kids category goes, that was my screw up. Looking back to when I was grabbing prizes for the winners Jack told me that if I wanted to we could go as high as 6th place. But in the hustle of getting the 1st place rifles in order I forgot to get prizes together for those spots. And to be honest, I figured hastily, what was wrong with 3 winners. NVNative79 corresponded with me in an e-mail about how he felt that we do not have a youth rifle, youth archery and youth muzzy category and that we have more adult categories than youth categories but we always say its about the kids. Well what can I say except for he is right! So I personally apologize for not thinking of that. What it boils down to is that we should have made all of these decisions before the contest and we should have had our ducks in a row which we did not so mistakes were made. But we are not shady and greedy and if anything we are trying to have a good event with the best of intentions. I feel like you guys made a very valid point about the youth with the archery buck and if we had a 4th place he would of had a prize. Well its my turn to step up to the plate and I will find out who the kid is and give him a $100.00 gift certificate out of my pocket to be used somewhere in Elko.
As far as a muzzleloader category goes, it was deleted because of lack of entries and that is why it was added to the rifle category. Maybe one day we will make that category again but I don't see it in the next few years. We will probably concentrate more on the youth categories before we concentrate on more adult categories due to feedback from you guys. We only have a certain amount of donations and head mounts and buy most of our big prizes. Which brings me to another point. The Taxidermists that donate have gone above and beyond to help us out with donated prizes. I'm speaking about Gary Powell of North Slope Taxidermy who has donated since the early beginnings of our contest. Every year he donates several head mounts and Badlands backpacks and he stepped it up even further this year with more donations than ever before. Also, Al Harris of Rack Em Up Taxidermy has also proven that he wants to donate and give to the community and has gone out of his way to donate to our contest and give head mounts for prizes in this contest. I ask you to consider giving these guys your bussiness when you have a head mount. They have given considerable amounts of thier time and efforts to give you guys and your kids head mounts when you are the winners.
So why am I giving you this long and drawn out explanation? Because I respect you guys and your opinions and like to look at this as positive feedback. No matter who you are or what bussiness you owne, its easy for people to sit on the sidelines and find fault but in this case it was not for ones owne gain but for the concern of ones friend and the youth involved. This I can honor and respect. The only bad part was being accused of shadieness and dishonesty because I feel that over 11 years of putting on this contest all of us that are associated with it have done nothing but give to the community and anyone in his right mind can see that greedieness is not what drives us. Also, I hate to make this a thing about money, but IT IS about money. The more we have, the more categories and prizes we can give.
One more thing. This event takes quite a bit of time to set up and take down. Almost a full day on Friday to set it up and almost a full day on Sunday to tear it down and clean up. Anybody who is interested in helping us do this is welcome to help out. I will welcome you with open arms. You can either sit on the sidelines and complain or you can help us make this event better and any help given would be greatly appreciated. fatrooster.

This is a GREAT event for such a small town. Not only do you get to see the big heads but you get to network with other hunters and make friends. Great job to all who put this on for us to enjoy.

That was a very refreshing post fatrooster! Looks like you guys ran a great contest and are trying to make good out of everything and are trying to be fair when in all rights you probably don't have to be. This just goes to show you how difficult these things are to organize and carry out. Congrats to all the winners - those are some great trophies! Sounds like tons of fun for all involved.

Rooster, every year that i have been lucky enough to draw a tag I have participated in this contest since its infancy. I have been lucky enough to win the contest on a couple occasions and pulled some seconds and thirds but I still think you guys do a great job, and I think you are a stand up guy for admitting your fault and and accepting the feedback. I have donated several years and scrounged for items to be given away and i will look you in your face and tell you next time I see you that I truly appreciate what you and Jack and kendra have done with this contest. i know you all put in the work and it is not easy, I mean look at the other place in Spring Creek held one contest and you never heard from them again. So again KUDOS to you all, and we all know that Constable is a Man's man and he has proven that by what he has done to remedy the bull contest. As far as the youth with the big archery buck - Brendon Williams is his name Roger Dutton is his dad. Again above and beyond...As far as the muzzle loader category I will take it upon myself to find someone to donate a muzzle loader and I will continue to donate prizes and gather items through out the year for the contest.

Stand and take a bow for you are truly a sportman and a man's man... Great job way to make it happen, my hat is off to you... but i still dont think that land owners and Govt tag holders or out of state bucks should be in the contest!!

Good on ya for trying to set it right. It is a great event and I know a ton goes on behind the scenes. Whether it is in the infantile stage and is tough or not, this first place elk contest could have been determined by Lloyd Chistmas.

FierceCrow, thankyou for your kind words and thankyou very much for your past donations. I can't tell you enough how much it helps us out but before you get us a muzzleloader we should talk about it. You see, we have to have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize not including head mounts because if we do not give in one category as freely as another category we will be back at square one and accused of not being fair. So it gets more complicated as we go. But it is a start and I am open for suggestions as well as trying to come up with more stuff for the muzzy category. You are right about Jack, he is a mans man and I have great respect for him. We sometimes disagree(he is a foreman at work and I am a Union Steward)but still we have the utmost respect for each other. And him looking this bad situation in the face and making it right increases my respect. No matter what you do or how hard you try somebody always ends up unhappy. Because of the headaches involved and the money and prizes it takes to put this on, this event almost didn't happen this year. Jack always took on most of the responsibilities every year and it was wearing him down. Myself and several other people talked him into having it and took on more responsibility and therefore made it much better for him. After this fiasco he's made the comment that he does not want to be the man on the microphone. In my opinion he's the only man for that job and I will give him all of my support and take on hell with a bucket of water for him. Its the positive feedback like you've just given that makes it all worth while and I thank you for that. Its all supposed to be fun and its gonna be if we make it that way.
For those of you who do not have the time to donate, you can get in touch with me in a "private message" if you would like to donate something else. Every year we have people who express that they'd like to donate but don't know what to do. I do not want to use this website to solicite donations so I will leave it at that.
I don't know what you mean by Lloyd Chistmas but thankyou for your positive comments. It means a lot. fatrooster.

I'm not in any way involved in this Contest but must say that Rooster, "You are One Stand Up Dude!!!"

Well done! I tip my cap to you Sir!

Joey

Rooster,no worries man and I dont know WTF Lloyd Christmas is either. If you are going to takeover the contest I would be willing to come out and sit down with you over a couple of cold ones and work through the BS and get some guidelines down. I have done similar things for several years in past jobs for casino's and have many years experience running "promotions" where if all your ducks arent in a row then things go to hell in a handbag. Rooster I know who you are nd you willknow who I amwhen you se me :) you might be suprised but I come in peace!! With more sponsors nd donors for nextyear!!!

Ohandlet Constable know he is paying for the beers we consume while working on this!!!

I'm not taking over, Jack will still be in charge. He handles this contest well and he'll be good to go before you know it. But we will probably have a meeting and I'll get in touch with you and let you know when. And I already know who you are. I looked your name up on the profile icon. Your Matt M. Would be glad to have you help out. fatrooster.

Looks like a good time fatrooster. I will try and swing out there next year. The pics were great and looked like some monster bucks and bulls.

Drew sorry to read about the disgruntled people. I have never been to your contest...yet, but it sounds like a blast and im sure i will make it one day! Thanks for the work all you guys do in putting it on and to you for taking the time to post pictures and inform everyone about it!! Sounds like there are also some good suggestions coming out....although there is one thing that is for certain..you will NEVER please all of the people all of the time! But looks like your on the way to doing very well!!

As for nvnative79 i guess i understand you venting for your friend on here...but if i were to vent like you did, and then it turned around for the guy like it did....i would of at least apologized for my rants..you sir are a classLESS act!

whats with the name calling? if nvnative79 hadnt said anything, where would this all have led? if he had kept quiet, how may people would he have told what a crooked event this deal is? atleast it is all out in the open and sounds like mistakes are being mended as best they can. appologize?!! no way, i dont think he should

LAST EDITED ON Dec-17-10 AT 06:37PM (MST)[p]in my opinion if someone comes out on a public forum and complains about something like that and then it gets resolved then i would have been big enough to apologize in that same public forum...just me! To me it shows no class to rant if your not willing to go the other direction also. The whole deal could and would of gotten resolved in the same way without doing it on a public forum..IMO. Im sure he's a nice enough guy...and i wasn't at the contest. But now how many may think that the contest is rigged and wont be there in years to come? Not everyone visits this website, and not everyone will know that some issues got resolved, some will just know word of mouth. Just my opinion, not everyones that maybe it should of been kept out of a public forum and handled different.

Sorry for the name calling! there i said it

Thanks nvhunter for taking up for us and for everybody elses support. Nvnative and myself have already made ammends and some good things have come out of it. I appreciate all input that was given. Thanks to all. fatrooster.
