I was thinking of applying for the southern region since i feel like a I have a pretty good chance of drawing. I was just wondering if you guys could share a little information with me about the mountain home range and the needle range. Im not looking for anyones honey hole just curious what kind of country it is and if there are many mature bucks in the area. Are there lots of hunters, are there roads everywhere or if you do some walking will you be able to get away from the crowds. Once again not looking for a secret spot just want to know if the area is worth applying for and putting in all the time it will take to find a good area.
thanks
matt

I agree with the Monster and I'll add to it. There are a ton of mustangs that ruin all hunting out there. Heavy cover for the few deer out there to stay in.

I've hunted Iron/Beaver counties for over 30 years, some great, some good... some not so good! but, thats why they call it "Hunting"

Ranch exit 100 is a good place to start, my Brother and I were not chosen last year... but we went up any ways.. seen lots of Bucks, some really nice.. also seen a lot of bucks behind Beaver, south creek.. Baker canyon...Big John flats and puffer lake had some really nice deer as well..
Good Luck!

Matt, I agree with the other guy's, the area is huge, thick with lot's of roads. Probably some monster's out there but real hard to find. If you have the time to scout, don't pass it up! (I'm talikng about Mt. Home etc. If you're talking about the "southern unit" in general, I really think there are better units in UT.

There is definitly some monsters in the Mountain home range. But it would be so hard to hunt. The deer numbers are very low and the terrain is thick. Cool place though. I hope there is still some mature bucks in the Southern region after the pounding they took last season. They have got to start micro-managing these herds!

Silver..

ALSO.. there's a lot of good hunting around Manderfeild, hit the Foothills around the alfalfa (sp) feilds, there are a lot of resident deer that stay in those cedar areas year round..There's also Bone Valley, lots of Bucks there! Dog Valley, again, i've seen lots of real nice bucks taken from that area over the years

The southern section has most always been really good to me..

Good Luck

Silver

Paragonah and Parowan also has good hunting, lots of Cedars...

Also you may want to check out Panquitch lake, or on the outskirts of the city of Panquitch.
Cedar city has lots of good hunting, I've taken some really nice bucks around different areas of Cedar city.. I've taken a a few around the St George area ( dessert )
The Southern Section should be really good this year!

I think he means way too many hunters for it to be safe. There was an army there for muzzy season. They only stayed for 2 days and were gone.

Southern Utah has little deer numbers and to many hunters so stay the hellout that is all we need is more people if your not from here don't come hunt here. every year i go somewhere to hunt and find some wing ding from nevada california or northern utah wandering around messing things up just warning you locals don't like it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"SAY NO TO BIG ANTLERS"

Ya come hunt near Panguitch Youll find lots of hunters here and near panguitch lake well that is little navada and california and to many dumb hunters you could get shot at it is like vietnam on opening morning near the lake.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-23-07 AT 10:21AM (MST)[p]What an idiotic statement. I'm sure all the locals who own restraunts, motels, bars, gas stations, convenience stores, and sporting goods feel the same way.

I'm sure they hate the Californians and Nevadans who come to town with money ready to spend.

Ever think of the exorbitant price these folks pay for thier deer tags too? That money just goes right back into your state to help your deer. You are right, people from CA and NV are really wing dings.

Next time think before you make such an ignorant statement.

antlerless..

Your Kidding right? right? oh! ok, i get it... ha ha ha ha ha ... great sense of humor! ha ha ha ah

Ignorance huh what if i told you that my family owns and runs a convenient store in a small southern utah town and these guys come for five days of the hunt and stay at their cabin and don't come into town with any money. The others go camping and come with all their food and things they need. so they come with 20$ and leave with 20$. so before you go off calling me an idiot realize that it's coming from 26 years of seeing it with my own eyes!!!!!!!!!!!

"SAY NO TO BIG ANTLERS"

I'm glad to see everyone is so happy with the current deer hunting in southern utah after all southern utah is northern utahs playground and californias get away destination. oh and the money that the state gets money well wasted hey but look on the bright side our turkey populations are on the rise!!!!!!!

Hey get to know me man i'm not that bad of a guy at least your wife doesn't think so! wow i share my feelings and i'm an ass cool

I do kind of agree with anterless. He is absolutely right about the lack of hospitality in or around Southern Utah. I don't agree that all Californian's and Nevadan's are bad. I am from California and had a bad experience hunting around Panguitch Lake about five years ago. We actually bought all of our groceries in Cedar City, bought some ammunition and little necessities from the sporting goods in town and found that the people there were not very hospitable. Not to say that everyone is that way, just those I came in contact with. I would say that the only person that I met who was nice was the bartender at the beer bar. She happened to have moved to Cedar City from California. I had some drinks there on my last night in town. The conclusion to a poor hunting trip. The hunt sucked but that had more to do with the weather, and my inexperience with the area. The fishing was great though.

Antlerless,
Your family runs a store in Southern Utah? Do you mind sharing with us which store?
I don't believe we can question whether or not hunting brings in additional money to many rural areas in Utah. It does, just like any other region across the country with decent hunting (South Dakota and roosters, Kansas and whitetails, Southern Utah and mule deer).
My father, a southern Utah local, runs a business that benefits from non-locals during hunting season. I used to cuss "californinans" (a Californian was defined as anyone with a license plate, Utahns included, that didn't have a county sticker from one of the local neighboring counties) up and down while hunting my old stomping grounds. Anymore, and my dad would agree, the out-of-staters Texans, Californians, seem to be some of the most polite hunters out there. I would rather bump into a guy that is just out to have a fun time hunting from a different state, than some local with antlerless' attitude looking at me as a threat. What about you?
If you happen to hunt out-of-state (which most of us do), do you spend money where you hunt? Gas, dinners, lodging, equipment?

ok i'll chime in, i agree wheres the store? can you at least maybe say what little town? that way i'll be sure and spend my money elsewhere,,,, as i'm one of the hated california people,,, all i ever do is go every year mind my own bizz not bother anyone and try to shoot a deer and catch a few fish and enjoy the country, oh and yes i spend a lil bit of money when i'm there,,,, god i feel so "dirty" :)

as someone who has hunted all over Utah, and is from Utah, I can say that just about anywhere in this state you hunt the biggest A-holes will typically (not always) be the locals.

Ya, antlerass. Let us know what the name of the store is. So if I happen to go down that way, I can be sure to plan accordingly not to stop there for fuel. Wow. Three bucks a gallon? I'll keep truckin.

I tend to think Anterless just maybe joking... I hope..

Really, in all my years in Southern Utah, most all resident hunters and resident towns folks seem to be good people!

Now the ones I've came across that were semi hostile to outta staters were transplants, Folks that have moved to Utah within 5 years... Now they seem to think they own the roads, and the deer

Come with $20 and leave with $20? Please. I've hunted in a bunch of states and do so several times a year. Most of the time is more like "roll into town with $250. Spend it all in 2 days, pull another $300 out of the ATM, and have to rely on the credit card to get home."

So hunters never buy beer, ice, sodas, snacks, fuel, ammo, forgotten clothing items, etc. when they come into town? And their trucks never break down, and they never stay in the local motels, and they never eat at the local diners? Dude, what color is the sky on your planet?

I hope you shoot at me i'll own everything you have plus i'll keep this copy on my hard drive for evidence just in case somebody does get shot up there. They will know where to look

As a southern Utah Business Owner (hotel and resturant)

I call this BS. I welcome the out of state hunters, Especially those with Elk Tags. They stay, the eat, and they are always welcome. Hell if the want I can even get them in contact with people to hunt birds if they want a detour from the hunting of Elk or Deer.

Wow, this thread got off the point real quick, maybe that was antlerless' intention? If it was, then everyone fell into that trap!

Maybe someone else can help out ol' Silverbullet with general areas to start looking?

jasn

Hey there guy! i think i did answer Silvers questions... well, i least the best i could do!
Speaking for myself, i'd never lie to another hunter about good areas or bad areas..Hunting is hunting...

Wow fellars sorry to piss everyone off i guess what i did say was a little mean but i didn't call anyone an ass. I was going to say where the gas station is at but i think it might get burnt down. Just thought i would share what i have seen over the past 26 years. bobcat now i know how you feel

would it be better to ask your permission to hunt Utah? ONLY 26 YEARS? i've been hunting southern Utah longer than that!

what i've seen is a massive growth of TRANSPLANT out of state folks.. whom now assume the role of LOCAL... Fact is... I REALLY DON'T CARE IF YOU... OR ANYONE ELSE likes it or not, and who really cares how you feel?

I care MacVsog that is what these blogs are for is for sharing your feelings about something. thats all antlerless did and that is all your doing so whats the big deal lets all hug and be friends

Come on Anterless, growing up in Wyoming we actually despised you Utards, but Ive gotten used to you now, and heck actually like some of you, I knew you couldnt all be that messed up. Im thinking you are standing on the edge though, either that or just to young and dumb to know better.
