A friend of mine just got back from spending a week in this area and went on a trail ride for a day. The guy that took his family on the trail ride works for an outfitter in the area and told him it was good elk hunting and he should come up and go on an elk hunt. I am just wondering what you guys know about the elk hunting in this area thanks.

I think your friend misunderstood. What the guy probably said was he should have come up there to hunt elk before the wolves were introduced.

Yea, i dont know what a lower 48 wolf is worth to a hunter, but it's about time to start selling a few tags. . .

I am ready for a wolf hunt. I think they will be a terrific game animal to hunt. They have had an impact on the elk numbers in those districts around Yellowstone. I bet the range is in better shape and that the elk have adjusted to having big predators around.

I still don't think there are as many elk in 316 as there were prior to the wolf reintroduction.

I hunt 316 for several years until the introducing of the wolf. The last year that I hunt 316 was 03. This can be a tough hunt. Mules or horses are must. I think you can find better place to hunt. You will probably find more elk bone pile's than live elk.

Thanks guys for he replies. When my friend told me we needed to go up there and hunt because the guide told him he could get him a shot at a 350 bull during the early rifle hunt. I told him that I thought the wolves were hurting the elk population up in that area. Isn't the late hunt up there better?

NeMont, Did you get a survey of questions about new ways to manage the over-population objective hunting districts? I didn't, but am curious of the questions asked in the survey. Let me know if you can please. Did the wolves get one? I'm only half laughing. Thanks mtmuley

There some elk their, also that are monster bulls in 316, it is a real back country hunt with a experience on its own.

I didn't get a questionaire. I have listened to the over objective elk population debate for the Missouri River Breaks.

No doubt there are still elk in 316 and coming out of the park but their numbers are WAY down post wolf intro.

All I know is sample questions I read in our local paper. Doesn't seem like 2000 surveys can reflect the overall concensus of the whole state. mtmuley
