What the Hello does this mean?

In 2011 all mzzzy and rifle hunts will be 9 day hunts again. Changing from 5 day hunts because Aoude says.......

"I appreciate what the board was trying to do," Aoude says, "but, unfortunately, reducing the length of a hunt isn't the best way to save bucks."

Aoude says reducing the length of a hunt forces hunters to make the most of the days they do have. "And they're more likely to take the first buck they see," he says.

While the rifle hunt will run for nine days across most of Utah, four small areas in the state will have a slightly shorter season in 2011. The rifle hunt on the following units?Oquirrh-Stansbury, South Slope (Vernal), Monroe, and Plateau, Boulder/Kairparowits?will run for five days.

Kinda funny how the 4 units hurting with buck to doe ratios are staying with 5 day hunts. How in the hell does this make sence?

If Aoude says 5 day hunts force hunters to make the most of the days they do have. "And they're more likely to take the first buck they see," he says. And And And......reducing the length of a hunt isn't the best way to save bucks."

Then why are we keeping 5 day hunts in the four units that have horrible buck to doe ratios.

Good hell can we please have some new people manage our deer, PLEASE!!!

Or a'm I missing something?

Read between the lines,

Here let me help......

"A longer season allows more opportunity but MOST hunters won't take advantage of it (probably).

A 5 day season MIGHT save a buck or two but MOST hunters will feel the time crunch and shoot a smaller buck more quickly (possibly).

The seasen length isn't the BEST way to reduce buck harvest (true).

Reducing tags is the best way (correct).

BUT WE REALLY DON'T KNOW SINCE WE DON'T COLLECT ENOUGH DATA."

There.... did that help?

I favor reducing the amount of orange in October. It's one of the few ways to save the bucks from us. This still will not fix the declining deer population very much but it will allow for increased quality and higher buck sightings during the hunt.

There's a ton of unknowns in the ole mule deer equation however. We need to look at roads, predators, habitat, etc.

Zeke I agree

I think you misunderstood my post. If you and I and the DWR agree 5 day hunts don't save bucks than why are the 4 hurting units staying with 5 days. The DWR is contradicting it's self.
Thats all I was getting at.

You are absolutely correct!

It does seen contradictory to me as well.

I guess it's a way to keep us all guessing what will happen next. LOL

One thing I do know, the next 5 years will be interesting.

Best regards, Zeke

I don't think they have a clue what's better, 5 or 9. They may have a college degree in wildlife management, but that doesn't mean they know it all. I wonder sometimes how much "solid" evidence they have to back their theories. How much time do they really spend in the field studying 5 days or 9? I think most of what they say is just an "opinion", sometimes there might be a little evidence, but often it's just a guess. That's my opinion.
It's kinda like their deer estimates, mostly just an optimistic guess.

That would piss off a Bow hunter sorry about your luck!

I will only hunt 5 days with a gun if you bow guys only hunt for 2 weeks?

The DWR did NOT set the five/nine day season lengths, that was the Wildlife Board. Two differernt and often opposing entities.

its really pretty simple. many different regulatory divisions set many different regulations then they write them on small pieces of paper. then all the regs are placed in a big garbage can and shaken furiously. after that they grab one of those backpack style leaf blowers and aim it directly at the garbage can. it is turned on full blast for ten seconds while one rep from each of the different agencies swarm the garbage can and try to keep their suggestions in and toss out the others. when the ten seconds is up they turn off the leaf blower and everyone steps away from the can. they sweep the floor to create a clean slate and dump out the garbage can. they use everything that stayed in the can to create the next years proclimation. its the fairest way to make sure every voice is heard and all the agencies are properly represented

:) Desertdeer :) Now thats funny!

I really wish someone in the DWR or wildlife board could answer this question. I'm really not sure if 5 or 9 is better but its funny how they say that a 9 day hunts kills less deer. And then put the 4 hurting units in a 5 day hunt.

Next time any of us are in a rack meeting, lets be sure to ask this question!

no crap how far out of touch are some of these guys when it comes to what is actually going on in utah. these guys need to get off the couch get off the internet, quit listing to their neighbor cooter, or their dads uncle or what ever and actually go down to a deer comity meeting, then go to a rac meeting, then go to a wildlife board meeting to see how the process works.

The wildlife board is the one pushing the season dates.

The division cant even do its job! they are handcuffed by the special interest groups and gang raped by sfw.
