This may be a lame question but how common is a double throat patch? Out of all the deer I've taken I have only one with a double patch. I think they are a prettier cape personally. Is it a genetical thing or is it a maturity thing? The one that I have is probably my oldest deer as well.

It is not that common and I don't believe it has anything to do with maturity. Once in a while one just comes up with that trait, so it may have something to do with genetics. However, I doubt it and that's just a guess on my part.

This is a dumb question but what does the double throat patch look like? This is something I have never heard of and am very curios. Thanks

Instead of having one white patch on the throat they have two.

something like this

These would be the patches ^

They are more common in some areas than others. Some are barely discernible, while others are very defined. Here is an example of a very defined double patch.

Thats the first one I've ever seen on a whitetail...thats pretty cool...all I know is it makes a hellava nice target when they are standing there looking at you during hunting season....

I hunt an area in Idaho, that has about 70% deer with double throat patches.
Overall I think it is mayb 15-20% of deer???

I shot a beautiful whitey with a double throat patch. I should have mounted him. Kick myself for not. They are unique and very cool looking!! I think it does have to do with genetics.

After reading the post by bowhunt and the high percentage he sees in that one area, I guess it may well have something to do with genetics in a particular area. This is an interesting subject and I would agree that they make a beautiful mount!!!

Here's a pic of mine and I think he has the prettiest cape on a deer that I have ever seen. The 2nd patch isn't as prominant as some of the bucks you guys have shown but I love the cape.

That is one good looking Buck! I'm working on getting a pic of a pronghorn, that my cuz and I found this hunting season.

Here is a pic of the pronghorn my cuz Aaron84 and I found while out on my limited entry elk hunt this year.

Marley,
Seen this pic before but still one of the coolest 'buck on ground' picture. That's a really impressive deer
In my area I thought the white patches were age but maybe its more genetic?

Took this pict in earl November. pouble bib and dark patch on top of his head. Awesome looking buck. Watched him for about a month and then he disappeared. Saw some kids where he was packing guns and havent seen him since. Makes me sick!

After seeing all your other pics I'm going to have to go with a genetical thing since there are quite a few younger bucks with them. They make a pretty mount. I had a guy offer me $800 for the green cape from my buck. I had to turn it down.....That mount is something I look at every day of my life and hopefully my future grandkids. Thanks for the posts, I've always wondered.
