Would love to know ur guys feelings on this mount and what he might score if a tape was put on him? I shot him earlier this year and always looking to be critical on taxidermy work.

Well, Appleman, if a tape hasn't yet been put on him you best get that done after asking all of us to give you a few guesses. Awesome deer, very unique rack. Something does look funny but not sure what it is yet...

I put a gross score on this deer at 214 7/8 inches.

Great buck. Thanks for sharing the photo.

My guess would be around 210" gross non-typ. Awesome kickers.

Did you shoot him in early to mid September? The cape looks fresh out of his summer coat.

IMO, The mount certainly has the dimensions of a younger buck (the thin nose, thin neck, thin everything). The mount looks great if the actual buck was as young of a deer as it looks in the mount photo. The mount looks like it lacks a bit of testosterone, but sometimes that's how a September buck appears. I'd be curious to see the kill photos to compare. Those antlers are awesome!

Not a bad looking mount at all. Pseronally, I like it when the ears are positioned to not have so much distance between them and the main beams.

As far as score, what a unusual and great looking non typical! I give him about 220 but wouldn't surprise me if he were more.

Thanks for sharing!!

for some reason the rack itself looks artificial.... maybe stained? Either way i think it looks way cool. Looks like a younger buck rack with insane genetics.

I would say 215" as well.

The mount is cool. Im guessing it is a young deer by the features. Not overly heavy. The ears down shows off the split beam and drops so I like it. Eyes and face look reallly good.

Im impressed. Congrats on a great, unique deer and an excellent mount!

It looks like the form was a bit small, making it look skinny. Maybe it was that skinny...? The ears look wrong to me. Tell us about the hunt, he is a great buck!

great buck no awesome buck

for me im not a fan of the ears straight. The ears to me also look like they might be turned incorrectly or rotated forward to much.

I do like a summer mount but the summer mounts need to show more detail. they need to show vanes in the face, they need to show more muscle definition. "Paul Pennie detail is what I'm getting at" To me it looks like they stretched the hide over a plane commercial mount and stitched it together.

but I am being hyper critical. I wish half my mounts turned out as nice as yours.

Id say gross 210-220

The harder you work the luckier you get!!

213" is what I came up with. That buck is as willow racked as they come what is he 10" of mass per???

I love the rack but to me the mount is not quite right. I think the ears are too far out at the butts and the eyes bulge a little too much and face outward more than reality and should be slightly more forward. The cape is really white faced and looks like a summer coat which tells me the deer was a little older and should have features that match that such as a fuller neck or at least extra skin down the bottom of the neck and a roman nose.

Also agree with SWbuckmaster it should show more muscle definition and veins with the short hair.

For eye set look at the pic of the buck in the post by huntolive "What does this buck score?" you will notice the eyes face more forward than this mount.

I will guess the buck at 185" gross.

The mount is clean, but that's the end of it.

The buck is a mexico buck and should be rutty looking, with a swell to the neck. This buck is mounted on an early season mannikin with no swell to the neck.

It is a young deer, no doubt, but still should have the swell on the neck from a January deer.

Earbutts are too long, and the ears are straight out.
With double droptine bucks the droptines are seen better and look larger when the ears are back instead of forward.

The eyes look droopy instead of alert. Front eyebrow needs to be lifted to match the attitude of the ears.

Nice buck, and very clean mount though.

Nice Rack!

But I have to say the neck looks way to thin. Maybe it was the camera angle? Can you post a few pics from different sides?

Antlers are too big and there are too many points. It doesn't look like the typical Ut herd buck that I'm used to shooting! LOL

Actually is a cool looking buck and a very nice mount!
Thanks for sharing! I'm not qualified to venture a quess on the score (or don't want to) but I would shoot him even though he has a younger look to him.

Nice rack. The ears are to far away from the form. The Apex opening or V notch in the Ears need be no more 3/4 to 1 inch from the form. Your Ear butts are to narrow look at your reverence. The lower lobe on the Ears should not be lower than the lowest part on the eye orbit bulge. The Ears are to much facing outward they are normally at a 45 angle into the form. Less clay under the eyes.

Beautiful buck but the neck looks small for a late buck.

First of all it's a beautiful buck. Over 200" for sure... All that character is amazing...

Second- if you truly did shoot the buck, and mount him, you need to do 2 things here. Field photos would be great so we can make a good comparison. Also, you obviously took a photo of the mount and photoshopped it into a plain background (No shadows)- I'm not opposed to that per se, but it makes your buck look, well, wrong. The antlers look stained and too dark for the lighting. The deer appears to have a yellowish light above it and too the right slightly, yet your background appears to be much brighter and light coming directly from the right, not above at all. The lines you had to cut out around the mount probably make him look skinnier, and less realistic than he actually is. I would post the original photo of the mount, with whatever the background was. I promise it will look better. (Or you can take new pics with a plain background- not photoshop background).

Third- The mount itself looks great. I like the face, eyes, and even the setting of the antlers... but like I mentioned- a little photoshop makes everything look photoshopped...

I sure do appreciate all of the great responses. I pretty much agree with all of them in one way or another. The pic certainly wasnt photoshoped though. I dont even have the buck back from taxi yet-he just sent me the one pic for my approval. The only measurement I took was the outside spread at a touch over 30. Although I certainly doubt that this spindly, cute little buck scores as high as some guesses. A fun hunt! Saw him the day before in my spotter and passed till discussing him at dinner that nite. Went back in the morning to try and relocate him and did. It was a long stalk through some thick stuff but finally worked in close for an escaping Texas heart shot. After a few follow ups to make sure, I saw that the g-4 on his left side was hit-so that is the only thing-that is repaired-luckily I had good visual of him alive and was able to get it back normal. He does look thin necked in that pic with that lighting and I dont think you want every mount with the upright ears in your collection ,although you can bet that I will be checking all that more closely when I get him back! Thanks

appleman,

What time of the year was it shot? Were his antlers that dark when you shot it? Any field photos you'd be willing to share? Again, thanks for sharing and congrats on a great buck!

very unique buck. i also think overall, it looks good. very slick appearance. i think most comments were right on, saying it needs a little fuller neck and maybe some definition in the face. it kind of does look like the hide was just thrown on and sewn up, with no extra shaping around the nose and face to give it that live personality look we are all hoping for when we pick something up from the taxidermist. anyone looking for a nice life like artistic touch should get a hold of kelly memmott in PG. he is one of the best, most underrated guys around. he has done an elk, antelope, deer, and some small game for me. i would not go anywhere else, but i think most hunters are like that. you find someone you like, and you stick to it. just my opinion.

WOW! Great buck! Congrats!! The head and neck seem to be a little skinny, almost as if the manikin was to small? Was it a young deer? Overall it is a nice mount though!

Post some field photos so that we can compare. Its left antler looks like its floating above its head and the left ear tip looks fuzzy
