Col unit 54 landowner tag

I'm thinking about buying a landowner tag for unit 54, 2nd rifle in Colorado. I've never purchased a landowner tag before so I'm new to the process. Where would be the best place to buy the tag at a fair price? What about timing...when would I need to secure the tag before they are sold out? Any guess on price?

Sorry, I wanted to say it before some hater beat me to it.

Anyway, (joke),

plan on spending about $1000 or so per point it takes to draw that hunt. If it is a 3 preference point draw, about $3000.

These are typial prices charged by the tag brokers, (Huntin' Fool, Pennington, etc.) and you might get it cheaper if you shop around or can make a direct contact, but for most tags the tag brokers are only marking them up a few hundred bucks, so it might not be worth the hassle.

If you know you want to go on this hunt, put a deposit down now. From what I've seen, the reputable guys refund 100% if you can't take the tag.

Who knows how long this program will be around, don't miss out. Lots of people hate it, but I don't because I've seen the good it has done in keeping landowners connected to the wildlife and God knows that in Colorado, we need that.

For a 2nd season tag in the last few years i have seen them for a lot less then that.

I cant remember for sure but I thought they were in the $1700 to $2500 last year for 2nd season 54.

Every year timing is different. Some places you can put a deposit down right now and prob pay a slightly higher price, but you will also probably get a tag. The longer you wait you can sometimes get it cheaper, but there might not be any left. Last year most tags went pretty quick I think for the most part due to the date changes. Dates are only one day different this year. 54 has been pretty tough since the die off.

Two shooter is correct on what the tags went for last year. Prior to 08 you had to give an arm and a leg and couldn't find one. Now they are reasonable again, of course due to the winter kill.

I was hoping to pay around $1k for the tag...$2500 may be tough to justify.

Very, very few 1K tags out there for any unit. 42,421 are usually available for that price but you can draw them with no points.
