Mule deer non res points?

So if you were a non res, and you had 5 points, and you were not an archery hunter, what hunt would you put in for this year.

Last year I put in for the crawford muzzy, this is likely my last year due to the $65.00 hunting license I have to buy and never use.

Really thinking bookcliff muzzy but would love to do a rifle hunt due to the weather.

Not sure what unit would be good for you , but I can't beleive your complaining about a $ 65 license .

I'm wishing I was a Utah non resident about now so I could take advantage of that smokin deal . Don't even get me started on the Ariz. , Nevada , and Idaho license's that I have been purchasing for around 13 years , and I have drawn very few tags in those states .

Sorry to vent , but you have to pay to play .

Hey Shotgun59...if you want to play you have to pay and most states are getting there now. How about Nevada, I have a stack of $142 hunting licenses, need some more for a good pot of SOUP.

Geez, sorry about the question. I did not mean to complain, $65.00 is not overly bad, and yes you can spread it over 2 years.

It is just another "straw on the camels back" hunters continually face. You have to pay to play, I realize that, it just ads up when I buy wyoming and colorado points, my own in state points and permits, plus this year my kid gets to hunt (which will be worth every cent), and then add in the permit fee when you do actually draw.

I will do muzzy bookcliffs this year.

To me this is kind of like asking what lottery game should I play? If you only had one chance and could only play one game a year which one would it be? Myself, I would play the one that would pay the most, makes sense right?

Your points right now really don't mean too much, you are not assured to draw any and you have less than a 10% chance on anyone of them so why not pick the best one?

Henry Mtn. anyweapon would be my choice, if i was in your shoes.

I feel your pain Shotgun , and I understand the " straw on the camels back " . I don't have the kids to buy licenses for , so its not as hard on my pocket book .

I guess it boils down to wait a guy is willing to wait for , and what he is willing to pay in the long run . I think about 13 years of buying non-resident Arizona license's , and it's scary what all the western states cost me in points and application fees .

For me I have to look at whats realistic as far as drawing . I had to take a hard look at the odds and the cost of Wyoming sheep , and with only ten points and the cost of the point every year I realized my money could be spent on other hunts .

In Utah I'm on the waiting list for elk since I drew a couple of years ago , and I'm thinking along the same lines as you for muzzle bookcliffs . My chances are slim with my points , and I havent spent a lot of time there , but from buddies that have hunted it I'm thinking it sounds fun .

Good luck with your choice and drawing .

You are going to have to get real lucky with only 5 points, go for the best if all you have is luck. Anything Henries! BH1

As far as what unit to apply for, I think any of the good ones are still a long shot with only 5 points. I have three boys (10, 15, and 16) so I understand your financial pain. Our out of state application costs get pretty spendy. Last year we applied for around 120 tags. I build points in the cheap states for the kids AZ, UT, CO, WY. UT is actually one of the cheaper states to build points if you spread the $65 over two seasons and several species.

I can't complain too much about the $65, because my first ten points were only $5 each. Utah was always such a good deal. I only have $180 into my twelve points.

I'll have to respectfully disagree with everyone who is okay with the idea of being required to buy a license, with very little chance that you'll get the opportunity to use it. Hell, even the crooked ass airlines will refund your money or give you a credit if you don't get to use your plane ticket.

The money has to be generated somehow. Either ALL the tags and licenses have to go up or something else to offset the shortfall if the license fee is not required up-front.

I don't like buying the nonres licenses either but I can accept the fact (If I want to play). I guess we could go hunting with the "required" licenses! Just a thought...

Oh, good luck on your deer application. I heard the Books will take it on the chin this winter. Lots of snow and cold temps but guys smarter than me may have a different outlook on the herd out there.
