Colorado Early Rifle Hunt - 10 Pts

We are looking to put together a Deer Hunt for Colorado for 2011. We have 10 Deer Pts and we are only familiar with two Colorado Early Rifle units, they would be Unit 43 & 471.

I would appreciate it if someone could offer some advice. It took alot of years to accumulate those points and I would like some feedback as to where in Colorado you would spend those points with the parameters being that it must be a Early Rife Hunt (September) and we really like hunting the High Country.

I was told of an area in Unit 43 that a rather popular TV program did a show there several years ago. I can remember seeing the show, it was actually a two part show and it looked like just what we are looking for. That was several years ago and I know things change. I won't name the area since I know how sensitive people are on this site to naming areas over the internet.

But I'm not sure if Unit 43 is the best area to spend 10 pts on a Early Rifle Hunt. You know after taking all the years to accumulate the points you would like to know you are making the right decision in applying for the area that will give you the best chance at a good buck.

We are backpackers and are used to the High Country, We have done 8 backpack hunts in WY and Co over the last 13 years and that is our preferred method of hunting although depending on where and how far back in we may consider a drop camp.

I would like to communicate via emails with anyone who would offer some advice. You know after spending the time to accumulate the pts you want to make the right choice as to unit.

Thanking you in advance.

I think there are a couple better high country hunts that didn't have the winter kill that 43/471 had a couple years ago. I also love hunting the high country, and if I had those points I would be looking else where. PM me if you want and I could tell ya a little more.

+1. There are still some damn nice deer in those units, but it has not recovered yet from the bad winter. I'd wait or look elsewhere. Good luck.

The couple units that mention are good units. Unit 471 is a very small unit and with archery hunters and elk hunters getting there before your hunt starts most of the deer are pushed down into the timber. Unit 43 has tons of country and holds some great bucks but it is not the hunt that it used to be. There are still some big bucks but you will have to hunt very hard and cover alot of the unit. Unit 74 is a better hunt as far as the high country hunt but i don't think 10 points will get you the tag. Nobody with 10 drew it last year.

Thanks, guys for your information and replies. I think we are going to wait until next year to spend the points.

Thanks,

LAST EDITED ON Jan-29-11 AT 12:41PM (MST)[p]Actually 75% of the people with 10 points (nonresidents) were picked last year for unit 74. But I dissagree that it would be a good choice in the near future. The bad winter that got central Colorado did not get this area, but they had a winter after that that did. Snowed about 2 feet in Durango in January and didn't melt until alomst May. Know a guy who scouts the north part of 74 for goats and normally sees a fair number of good bucks. This past summer, he did not see hardly any. Would wait a couple of years on that unit as well.

My bad i thought for some reason that you had 9 points. Looks like you could draw with unit 74 with 10 points. There are some great bucks in this unit. I scouted it during the summer and found there to be some great bucks.
