Limited Entry ??

Would the odds be better if you put in as a group or a individual to draw.

Example: 4 guys with 8pts each vs. 1 guy with 8pts

Which has the better chance? Or are they the same?

The 1 guy with 8 pts should have better chance to draw in every limited entry unit in Utah than a group of 4. In the units where there is only a few tags (e.g. Henries) there would be a significant difference, but in an area where there are many tags (e.g. Book Cliffs rifle) the difference in odds would probably be quite small. It really depends on the unit and the number of tags available and how much you really want to hunt as a group. If you are going for a unit with few tags, one option would be to split up into groups of 2 or just apply individually and be willing to help your buddy on their hunt or vice-versa.

trphymuleyhntr, are you asking when you submit as a group; are you submitted as 1 application or 4 applications that is if one of you is drawn then the other 3 are picked up automatically?

For instance if there were 50 applicants your odds would be 1:50 or 4:50 (considering every other aspect being equal)?

I don't know? I always wondered the same thing, and I bet every state has their own formula.

Oh ya guys Limited Entry in Utah! I just read the new Guide Book for 2011.

This is what I got out of this year proc: If you apply as a group. Example: 4 apps with a total of 15 limited pts. They divide them between the 4 applicants and then round down to the nearest pt. Result would we be 3.75 or 3 pts per applicant.

The question is do all 4 applicants get only 3 lottery numbers (e.g.)? Or do they share 12 lottery numbers? Since one draws all draws, or vice versa?

Any how just curious! I drew 2 years ago! Book Cliffs solo.

I'm pretty sure the group gets 3 numbers total plus one for this years application. It's just like a guy with 3 points applying. Except if your group gets pulled you all get the tag.

Based on your senario with each of the 4 people applying with 8 points, this is how it goes. Since, all 4 have the same points "8" then the group gets "8" random numbers from the computer. Then the lowest number of the eight becomes their number that is in the drawing. Eight chances to get a low number, which is the same as someone who is applying by themself with 8 points, he would get eight numbers in the computer and then the lowest is used for the drawing.

If the 4 people had different points (i.e. 8, 8, 7, 5), you would add them up = 28 then divide by 4 = 7. The group would get seven random numbers in the computer to get a low number for the draw. This hurts the two with 8 points but helps the other two. If 8 points would give the two guys a bonus permit (half the permits go to those with max points applying for a specific hunt), by applying by themselves (or together), then applying as a group they would not get the bonus permit and would have to hope to get one of the random permits that go to those with less than max points.

So, applying as a group vs. single, makes no difference. Unless, there are only 6 permits or less available, then the group would never get a permit for this hunt because they would not qualify for the bonus permits "3" and there would only be "3" left for the rest.

It would help guys with lower bonus points to put in with a couple guys with higher points. Helps the ones with lower points and hurt the odds for the ones with higher points.
